WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD
1 John 1:5-7
INTRODUCTION:
Do you see people taking walks all over town during the warmer months?
Many of us would say
yes. Some of us could say we take walks. and testify "It is pleasurable
to walk with some one you love." The text talks about a walk with the Lord.
Please follow as we develop the theme of this
message.
1. WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD; WE WALK IN LIGHT.
2. WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD; WE WALK IN FELLOWSHIP.
3. WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD; WE WALK IN VICTORY.
1. WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD; WE WALK IN LIGHT. v 5
EXPLANATION:
A. THE LIGHT OF GOD'S RIGHTEOUSNESS. "GOD IS"
(5) And this is the message we have heard from Him
and announce to you, that God is light,
B. THE LIGHT OF GOD'S REVELATION. "NO DARKNESS"
" . . .that God is light,
and in Him there is no darkness at all.
ILLUSTRATION:
J. Vernon McGee tells a story on himself related to darkness. He hunted
regularly with a trusted a
friend and on one occasion they agreed to separate in order to track
an animal. They were to meet at a given point. Dr. McGee got to the rendezvous
place first.
The weather was very cold and rather than wait out in the open he went into a near by cave. Inside he felt warmer and thought he could wait there for his friend. He decided to light a match and start a fire. When the fire was burning brightly he could then see several snakes. He got out of there quickly.
What seemed just fine and cozy in the dark scared him in the light.
It is like that when one is in Christ. What seemed just fine in the dark
appalls us in the light.
APPLICATION:
We Christian oppose many activities of the world. We can not tolerate
many worldly activities
Why? We walk with Christ in the light.
2. WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD; WE WALK IN FELLOWSHIP. v 6-7 b
EXPLANATION:
A. FELLOWSHIP DEFINED.
{6} If we say that we have fellowship with Him and <yet> walk in
the darkness, we lie and do
not practice the truth;
1. What it is not. Not just
suppers and after church get togethers.
2. What it is. It is communion
or partnership on an intimate level.
B. FELLOWSHIP DEVELOPED. "WALK IN THE LIGHT" v 7 a
{7} but if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have
fellowship with one another,
1. Walk Submissively.
2. Walk Obediently.
ILLUSTRATION:
In the Old Testament we have an example in Noah of one who had fellowship
with God. Noah
walked with God and God use him to establish a remnant of righteous
people. Noah was told to build an ark. God gave Noah the plan
for this ark. It had one window and that was on top of the ark. If he wanted
any light he had to look up. The light for the Christian life also comes
from above today.
APPLICATION:
Today we are to walk in light. We like Noah must look up toward our
God. Just as He directed
Noah He will direct us.
3. WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD; WE WALK IN VICTORY. 7 b
EXPLANATION:
A. BECAUSE WE KNOW WE ARE CLEANSED FROM THE .
. ROOT OF SIN.
B. BECAUSE WE KNOW WE ARE CLEANSED FROM THE . .
ROUTINE OF SIN.
1. The word "cleansed"
has a TENSE OF CONTINUATION.
2. The word "cleansed" has
a TENSE OF COMPETENCE
3. The word "cleansed has
a TENSE OF COMPLETENESS
ILLUSTRATION:
Jerry Vines tells the story of a man he witnessed to who said he could
not be saved. Dr. Vines told the man to read Romans 10:9-10. The man did
but he still did not accept the truth of that verse. Pastor
Vines then ask the man to read these verses over and over again, The man
agreed and a few months latter called Dr. Vines exclaiming "it works, It
works, It works, I have been saved.
APPLICATION:
God's word causes us to have faith. Faith brings victory. The root and
routine of sin are swallowed up in victory through the cleansing work of
Jesus Christ.
CONCLUSION:
1. WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD; WE WALK IN LIGHT.
2. WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD; WE WALK IN FELLOWSHIP.
3. WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD; WE WALK IN VICTORY.
