WHAT WE HAVE FROM A LOVING GOD.
1 JOHN 3:1-3

(1) See how great a love the Father has bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of God; and <such> we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. {2} Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we shall be.    We know that, when He appears, we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him just as He is.    {3} And everyone who has this hope <fixed> on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

INTRODUCTION:
God is love. This epistle shares that truth clearly. Because God is love we receive a multitude of blessings from him. Let us look at those emphasized in the text.

I.    WE HAVE PRIVILEGES FROM A LOVING GOD.

II.    WE HAVE PROMISES FROM A LOVING GOD.

III.    WE HAVE PURITY FROM A LOVING GOD. v 3

I.    WE HAVE A PRIVILEGE FROM A LOVING GOD. v 1

EXPLANATION:

A. THE MANNER OF THE PRIVILEGE. v 1 a
        See how great a love the Father has bestowed upon us, that we should be called  children of God;
        and <such> we are.

B. THE MYSTERY OF THE PRIVILEGE. v 1 b
"For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.

C. THE MOMENT OF THE PRIVILEGE. v 2 a
Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we shall be.

D. THE MYSTERY OF THE PRIVILEGE. v 2 b
" . . . and it has not appeared as yet what we shall be.

ILLUSTRATION:
Burnell Lewis is an evangelist friend of mine. Recently he went on a preaching tour to Russia. He and Bob Warner and many of the Missouri team had the same driver for many of their events. This man did not seem to be as open to the gospel. Bob and Burnell decided they would not boldly share with him. They went out of their way to express kindness to him. They gave him generous tips.

When they got ready to leave Russia they urged every one to give a love gift to this man. The gift totaled over $200.00 which equals several months pay. The man was overwhelmed. He ran after Burnell and Bob and motioned toward heaven and then pointed toward his heart and made a hugging symbol.

APPLICATION:

It is a privilege to know Christ. It is a privilege to share Christ. It is a privilege to see others transformed by the power of God.

II.    WE HAVE A PROMISE FROM A LOVING GOD. v 2

We know that, when He appears, we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him just as He is.

EXPLANATION:

A. PROMISE ONE HE SHALL APPEAR. v 2 b

B. PROMISE TWO WE SHALL BE LIKE HIM. v 2 c

C. PROMISE THREE WE SHALL SEE HIM JUST AS HE IS. v 2 d

ILLUSTRATION:
Dr. F.B. Meyer learned the secret of appropriation when he was addressing a large group of children who became very. On the verge of losing his temper, he prayed in his heart, "Thy patience, Lord!" Immediately all anger and annoyance died.  From then on he used the same formula for every difficult situation.

When he felt lonely, he said, "Thy companionship, Lord!" When he was afraid, "Thy serenity, Lord!" When he felt critical of others, "Thy love, Lord!"   He found the Savior sufficient for his every need when he appropriated by faith the promises of God!

APPLICATION:

How arew e at claiming the promises of God?

III.    WE HAVE A PURITY FROM A LOVING GOD.   v 3

{3} And everyone who has this hope <fixed> on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

EXPLANATION:

A. PURITY PRODUCED BY CONCENTRATION ON HIM. v 3 a

B. PURITY PRODUCED BY COMPARISON WITH HIM. v 3 b

ILLUSTRATION:
In the Southern Baptist Convention we have an emphasis on sexual purity. It is called TRUE LOVE WAITS. In this program youth are ask to sign a commitment card indicating their desire to remain sexually pure until marriage.

The national news media picked up on this and I heard them interviewing a young man and a young lady. They asked the young man "why did you make such a commitment?" He responded by saying "I have always believed this was right, my parents and all my family have embraced these principals." The question then came "what do your friends think about this?" The lad said "they have all supported me and some of them have made a similar commitment."

Then the questions came to the young lady. She was asked "what do your friends say." She told the interviewer "I am happy to say no one has made fun of me in fact several girls told me they wish they had waited."

The news media was surprised by those answers. They did not expect to hear such a positive response. The world needs Jesus. They need Him for a pure quality of life and they need Him happy and hopeful time of death.

APPLICATION:

Purity can be a reality in the Christians life because we are His children. Because we have confidence in Christ and we concentrate on Him he causes us to be pure.
