ASSURANCES
1 JOHN 5:12-15

(12) He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.
{13} These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life.    {14} And this is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.    {15} And if we know that He hears us <in> whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.

INTRODUCTION:
All of us need assurances. All of us like to be assured that we are loved and appreciated. Our life as a Christian need assurances. God knew that and He planed for us to receive assurances. God desires our faith to be strong and that it would get stronger. He wants us to grow in grace. John tell us of three ways God assures us. He give us assurances as:

I. WE HAVE ASSURANCE IN OUR SONSHIP.

II. WE HAVE ASSURANCE IN OUR SCRIPTURE

III. WE HAVE ASSURANCE IN OUR SUPPLICATION

I.    WE HAVE ASSURANCE IN OUR SONHIP. V 12

EXPLANATION:

A. THE VERIFICATION OF THIS LIFE. v 12 a     " . . .)He who has the Son has the life;. . ."

B. THE VALUE OF THIS LIFE. v 12 b     ". . . he who does not have the Son of God does not have
                                                                 the life."

ILLUSTRATION:
My friend Evangelist Burnell Lewis spent the night at our house the other night. He told me of an experience he had while preaching a revival in Florida. The pastor Luther Dyer played golf and he had witnessed to several people while playing golf.

One of the ladies in this church was good friends with two ladies who played golf professionally. They had told this friend they did not want to play with the preacher anymore. But Luther wanted to have Burnell get the opportunity to play golf with these ladies and maybe get them to come to the revival.

Just before revival someone took Burnell to a very nice seafood restaurant. The restaurant had a long line and after waiting outside in line for a while they decided the wait would be too long. They tried to leave but people kept refusing to move so they could leave. At this time an election for a local office had all of the radio stations and television time saturated with their advertisements.

Burnell started asking for everyone's attention and said he had decided to run for office and he would promise to end waiting at restaurants. He elaborated on this subject and had almost everyone laughing. The crowd broke open at he got out, but many promised to vote for him

The next day this lady in the church called her lady friends who were pro golfers and ask if they would like to play golf with the evangelist. They refused and then they began to tell this friend about the funny man last night outside the restaurant. This lady knew this was Burnell and ask if they would like to play golf with that man and they said yes.

During the golf game these ladies found out Burnell was an evangelist. At first they did not believe it but then they ask him if he were a preacher and what he preached. So he gave them a mini sermon and one golfer prayed to receive Christ. She then asked about the Holy Spirit. Burnell tried to explain. Then someone said why don't you talk to the other Lady and Burnell said " I don't think I have to, the Spirit seems to say I don't need to talk with her. He then got an opportunity to ask the Lady if she had ever given her life to Christ. Tears began to roll down her face and she said "yes just this morning but I have not told anyone how did you know,

Latter Burnell watched Jullie Prentice being interviewed after she won a very large tournament. The interviewer ask her why she was obviously so different. What made a change in you." She said "do you really want to know?" He said "yes." She said "Christ has changed my life. I am a completely different person since I gave my Life to Christ.

What makes the difference is not how many times you have been through the Bible, but how many times and how thoroughly the Bible has been through you.

Illustration    What to do with the word.

If you are cold, let it WARM you, If you are asleep, let it WAKE you,

If you are a backslider, let it WARN you, If you are defiled, let it WASH you.

If you are disobedient, let it WHIP you. If you are uncertain, let it WITNESS to you.

If you are unsaved, let it WIN you.

ILLUSTRATION:
There are certain things that God will never do, no matter how earnestly one prays. For example, if a young couple, zealous and devoted, were about to go as missionaries into the jungles of South America, they conceivably might ask a group of friends to join them in prayer that their coming baby should be born without original sin so that they would have an easier time rearing the child and might have more time to devote to their spiritual work. They could pray until they were dead but the prayer would never be answered. When the Lord Jesus Christ said that if we would ask anything in His Name He would do it, He expected us to have spiritual discernment enough to understand that this meant,. . . "BARNHOUSE p. 97

ILLUSTRATION: PRAYER -- LOOKING UP.
The 60-story John Hancock Tower in Boston is a magnificent piece of architecture. But it also is plagued by one of the more mysterious problems in skyscraper history. Shortly after its completion in 1972 literally dozens of its windows began popping out. 4 by 11 foot panes of glass came hurtling earthward and shattered on the street below.

The life insurance company, in an attempt to remedy the situation, replaced all 10,334 windows with 400 pound sections of half-inch tempered glass. The windows kept popping out. The mystery remains unsolved to this day. And windows continue to fall.

The solution? Two permanent guards now stand watch on the sidewalk. Their sole responsibility is to pear constantly upward and spot the cracked panes before the tumble to the ground.

We Christians are called by God to be constantly alert. The world in which we live can be quite dangerous. Temptations constantly are hurtling toward us, threatening to smash into our lives and destroy us. One of the ways God protects us is by commanding us to pray We like the guards, should be ever looking upward toward the Father for wisdom and strength.
