THE SIN UNTO DEATH
1 John 5:16-17

{16} If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin <which does> not <lead> to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not <leading> to death. There is sin <leading> to death. I do not say that he should pray about that.     {17} All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not <leading> to death.

INTRODUCTION:
I believe there are many benefits for the pastor who preaches through books of the Bible. If you simply take the text as they follow in the study no one can accuse you of picking a text to represent your pet peeves or your favorite doctrine. The text today calls attention to an unusual sin. It is called the sin unto death.

Deciding what sin is the sin unto death today is difficult. In the day John lived it must not have been so hard to discern for John says "If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin <which does> not <lead> to death, . . ." From that verse it would appear they could distinguish between a sin unto death and one not unto death.

Today I believe we must let the Bible tell us what sins have caused death in the past and call forth a general category of sin from those text. Please take notes as we try to discern what constitutes the sin unto death. We will look at the following categories:

I. THE COMMITTING OF A SIN UNTO DEATH.

II. THE CHRISTIAN AND THE SIN UNTO DEATH.

III, THE CLAIM RELATED TO THE SIN UNTO DEATH.

I.    THE . .COMMITTING OF A SIN UNTO DEATH.   v 16-17

OTHER HELPFUL VERSES

Jeremiah 7:16
"Therefore do not pray for this people, nor lift up a cry or prayer for them, nor make intercession to Me; for I will not hear you.

Jeremiah 14:11
Then the LORD said to me, "Do not pray for this people, for <their> good.

Ecclesiastes 7:17
Do not be overly wicked, nor be foolish: why should you die before your time?

1 Timothy 1:19-20
20 having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck, {20} of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I delivered to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.

Hebrews 12:9
Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected <us>, and we paid <them> respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live?

Some have asked the question, "do you mean these people are not good enough for earth so God takes them to heaven?" Yes that is what I mean. God may call a child home who is a poor example of a Christian here on earth. It is similar to a parent calling a disobedient chid home as their conduct is disappointing to the parent and the child is told to go home and go to their room.

No one goes to heaven who is not a child of God by God's grace. Non of us are good enough to go to heaven. So the argument loses its power when we focus on grace and being the child of God

A.    IT IS A SIN OF . . COMPROMISE.

1 Corinthians 5:1-5
It is actually reported <that there is> sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even named among the Gentiles; that a man has his father's wife! {2} And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away from among you. {3} For I indeed, as absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged, as though I were present, <concerning> him who has so done this deed. {4} In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, along with my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, {5} deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

1 Corinthians 11:27-30
{27} Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks <this> cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. {28} But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of <that> bread and drink of <that> cup. {29} For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. {30} For this reason many <are> weak and sick among you, and many sleep.

B.     IT IS A SIN OF . . CHALLENGING GOD.

Acts 5:1-11
But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. {2} And he kept back <part> of the proceeds, his wife also being aware <of it>, and brought a certain part and laid <it> at the apostles' feet. {3} But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back <part> of the price of the land for yourself? {4} "While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God." {5} Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last. So great fear came upon all those who heard these things. {6} And the young men arose and wrapped him up, carried <him> out, and buried <him>. {7} Now it was about three hours later when his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. {8} And Peter answered her, "Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?" And she said, "Yes, for so much." {9} Then Peter said to her, "How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband <are> at the door, and they will carry you out." {10} Then immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. And the young men came in and found her dead, and carrying <her> out, buried <her> by her husband. {11} So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things.

1 Chr 13:10 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzza, and he smote him, because he put his hand to the ark: and there he died before God. (KJV)

C.    IT IS A SIN OF . . CHANGING GOD'S WILL FOR YOURS.

1 Sam 26:9-30 (Saul was king and as such he was God's anointed)

9 And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against the LORD's anointed, and be guiltless?

10 David said furthermore, As the LORD liveth, the LORD shall smite him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall descend into battle, and perish.

1 Tim 5:19-29 (pastors are elders)

19 Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses. (KJV)

20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.

ILLUSTRATION:
Pastor O'dell Clay had a man in the church he pastored who constantly undermined him. O"dell prayed for this man and his attitude many times. Then at a business meeting this man accused O'dell of stealing by charging personal items to the church. The particular charge was meat etc. at a meat market near the church.

O'dell left the church and got the meat market man to come to the meeting and explain. He cleared the pastor. Then O'dell said to this man I am no longer your pastor I will not pray for you I just am no longer your pastor I turn you over to God for Him to deal with you.

APPLICATION:

O'dell never did that before or since but in one week the man died and the church had peace.

II.    THE CHRISTIAN AND THE SIN UNTO DEATH.    v 16-17

A.    THIS IS THE SIN OF A CHILD OF GOD.

ACTS 5:1-2
But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. {2} And he kept back <part> of the proceeds, his wife also being aware <of it>, and brought a certain part and laid <it> at the apostles' feet.

2 Sam 12:11
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbor, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun. (KJV)

2 Sam 12:12 For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun. (KJV)

2 Sam 12:13 And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die. (KJV)

2 Sam 12:14 Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die. (KJV)

2 Sam 12:15 And Nathan departed unto his house. And the LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife bare unto David, and it was very sick.

ILLUSTRATION:
A Man who had know the will of God for his life but continue to postpone it by promising God with empty promises came to his child's funeral threw himself on a casket and cried "I lied to God one time to many"

APPLICATION:

Some would say my God would not do that. You better let your God die and acknowledge the God of the Bible.

DAVID CRIED ABSALOM, ABSALOM, OH ABSALOM MY SON ABSALOM, WOULD TO GOD I HAD DIED .

I once pastored a Lady who said quite often, "DO NOT USE YOUR CHILDREN AS AN EXCUSE. GOD CAN REMOVE EXCUSES."

III.    THE CLAIM OF THE SIN UNTO DEATH. v 16-17

A.    Thr . . Claim Is  "I Do Not Say That He Should Pray  About"

B.    The . . Clamity of the Sin Unto Death.

        1.    IT IS A SIN FOR WHICH GOD WILL NOT ALLOW REPENTANCE.

Hebrews 12:16-17
16 lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. 17 For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.

ILLUSTRATION:
Many pastors my age remember the story of a very gifted and prominent minister. He was thought to be the man who would replace W. A. Crisswell. While he was pastor of a prominent church in Florida he was suspected of having several sexual affairs. Then the secretary of the church and her husband were found murdered. The pastor was a prime suspect but he was never charged.

In a revival meeting Bailey Smith preached from this text and a young lady said "I need to talk to you." She then related to him that she was the daughter of that murdered secretary. She asked "

Bailey if what you say is true how come that man is still alive? He murdered my mom and dad along with killing an unborn child.

Bailey said "honey we know God's word is true we do not know if that man really was a saved. But Bailey began to ask God the same question. God your word is true if that mans a Christian how can he still be alive without any public remorse or repentance.? A few month latter this man car stopped rather strangely in the middle of a freeway and a tractor trailer could not keep from hitting the car. The man died.

APPLICATION:

I believe First John's theme is assurance for the Christian. Is this verse giving ASSURANCES TO THE CHILD OF GOD? Yes the assurance is LORDSHIP IS NOT A FRIVOLOUS MATTER.
