Knowledge of the Truth
1 Tim 2:4-7
HCSB 4 who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and man, a man, Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself--a ransom for all, a testimony at the proper time. (HCSB)
Introduction
Some religions teach the average member could not understand the faith
but that is not true for a biblically base faith. God wants His people
to know Him and many of His ways. The text states God wants His children
to have a knowledge of the truth. Let's look at this passage of scripture.
1. Knowledge of the Truth through God's . . Desire. v 4
A. A Key to . . Participating in the Desire of the Lord.
1. Remembering God's word
and the actions of Jesus. John 2:19-22
19 Jesus answered and said to them, "Destroy this temple, and in three
days I will raise it
up." 20 Then the Jews said, "It has taken forty-six years to build this
temple, and will You
raise it up in three days?" 21 But He was speaking of the temple of His
body. 22 Therefore,
when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said
this to them; and
they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said. NKJV
2. Have
you learned to have faith because of what God has done in your past?
B. A Key to . . Profaning the Desire of the Lord.
1. Failing to learn from
the actions of God in our lives, and history. Mk. 8:17-21
17 But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, "Why do you reason because
you have no
bread? Do you not yet perceive nor understand? Is your heart still hardened?
18 Having
eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not
remember?
19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets
full of
fragments did you take up?" They said to Him, "Twelve." 20 "And when I
broke the
seven for the four thousand, how many large baskets full of fragments did
you take up?"
And they said, "Seven."21 So He said to them, "How is it you do not understand?
NKJV
2. Failing to heed the
exhortations of the more spiritual Believers. Heb 3:13
"but exhort one another daily, while it is called "Today," lest any of
you be hardened
through the deceitfulness of sin. NKJV
2. Knowledge of the Truth through God's . . Dominion. v 5 a
1. The Great Command.
Mark 12:29
Jesus answered him, "The first of all the commandments is: 'Hear, O Israel,
the LORD
our God, the LORD is one. NKJV
Illustration
1 Kings 18:23-24 23 Therefore let them give us two bulls; and let them
choose one bull for themselves, cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood,
but put no fire under it; and I will prepare the other bull, and lay it
on the wood, but put no fire under it. 24 Then you call on the name of
your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD; and the God who answers
by fire, He is God." So all the people answered and said, "It is well spoken."
NKJV
Some will say "if I could see something like that today I would believe, how come we don't see that kind of show down today?" May I remind you Saddam said his god Allah with defeat us? I would have enjoyed standing over Saddam while he was still down in that hideaway pit and tell him the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords had sent us to capture him.
Application
It truly was a modern day show down.
3. Knowledge of the Truth through
God's . . Dovetailing Mediator. v 5 b
1. Job Pled for a Mediator.
Job 9:28-33
28 I am afraid of all my sufferings; I know that You will not hold me innocent.
29 If I am
condemned, Why then do I labor in vain? 30 If I wash myself with snow water,
And cleanse my
hands with soap, 31 Yet You will plunge me into the pit, And my own clothes
will abhor me.
32 "For He is not a man, as I am, That I may answer Him, And that we should
go to court
together. 33 Nor is there any mediator between us, Who may lay his hand
on us both. NKJV
Application
Jesus provides the Mediator for whom Job longed.
4. Knowledge of the Truth through
God's . . Devout Ransom. v 6
A. This Devout Ransom Is . . Precious.
1. It can no longer be paid
with the blood of goats and calves. Heb 9:12
12 Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered
the Most
Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. NKJV
2. It can not be bought with
silver, gold. 1 Peter 1:18
18 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver
or gold, from
your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers,
3. It can only be the shed
blood of Jesus. 1 Peter 1:19-21
19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish
and without spot.
20 He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was
manifest in
these last times for you 21 who through Him believe in God, who raised
Him from the
dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. NKJV
B. This Devout Ransom Is . . Provided. Acts
20:28
28 Therefore take heed to
yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy
Spirit has made you overseers,
to shepherd the church of God which He purchased
with His own blood. NKJV
What can wash away my sin?
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!
Oh, precious is the flow that washes white as snow,
No other fount I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus
