INTRODUCTION

Mary, Mary, quite contrary how does your garden grow? Let me alter that a little and say Mary Mary Quite Contrary How do your "FOUR" gardens grow.

The text tells us Jesus grew in wisdom, stature and in favor with God and man. Those are four areas of growth. Christians are to be Christ like therefore we should grow in the same areas He did.

The baby Jesus became a boy. The boy Jesus became a man. In verse 51 of the text an interesting phrase tells us . . . "He continued in subjection to them;. . . ."

We can draw a conclusion from the text that submission is always necessary for growth. Are you growing? To whom or what are you in submission?

Let me share some insight to the word submission. The word means to stand or to arrange under the authority of another.

ILLUSTRATION
We don't always know the motives of others -- good or bad. One minister was walking down a row of fine old Victorian homes on a cold day when he spotted a young boy on the front porch of one home. The old-fashioned doorbell was set high in the door, and the little fellow was too short to ring it despite his leaping attempts.

Feeling sorry for the youngster, the minister stepped up onto the porch and vigorously rang the bell for him. "And now what, young man?" inquired the minister.

"Now," exclaimed the boy, "we run like crazy!"

ILLUSTRATION George M. Bowman says:

You see, the word "sincere" comes from two Latin words meaning "without wax." Artificers of Middle Eastern countries fashioned highly expensive statuettes out of a very fine porcelain. It was of such fragile nature that extreme care had to be taken when firing the figurines to keep them from cracking.

Dishonest dealers would accept the cracked figurines at a much lower price and then fill the cracks with wax before offering them for sale. But honest merchants would display their uncracked porcelain wares with signs that read, "sine cera," "without wax."
