Why Brag About the Cross.
Gal 6:14 (NASB)

14 But may it never be that I should boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.   (KJV)

1 Cor 1:29 & 31 29 that no man should boast before God. (NAS) 31 that, just as it is written, "Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord." (NAS)

INTRODUCTION
One trouble with the churches is that too many people want to have Easter without Calvary.
Paul was willing to boast about the cross.   Why?  Notiuce these points

        1. Because the Cross Reveals the . . Person of God.

                   2. Because the Cross Reveals the . . Pardon of God.

                            3. Because the Cross Reveals the . . Power of God.

                                    4. Because the Cross Reveals the . . Purpose of God.

1.    Because the Cross Reveals the . . Person of Our God.   v 14

14 But may it never be that I should boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

EXPLANATION

A.    The Cross Reveals Our God as a . . Holy God.         (2 Cor 5:19 NASB)
"namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

B. The Cross Reveals Our God as a . . Just God.    (2 Cor 5:21 NASB)
"He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (Gal 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us-- for it is written, "CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE"-- (Mat 27:46 NASB) And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice,   saying, "ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?" that is, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAST THOU FORSAKEN ME?"

ILLUSTRATION
Not long ago a lad disobeyed his mother. He hid himself behind the shrubbery surrounding the house. Through the afternoon and into the night his mother called his name with no response. Finally he tried the back door and found it open. Slipping into the house, he made his way upstairs into his bedroom and, under cover of darkness, prepared for bed.

Even the darkness became his enemy and drove sleep from his eyes. Through the moonlight he became aware of his mother sitting by his bed. With a sob he threw himself into her arms. Comforting his aching heart as only a mother can, she said, "Why didn't you answer when I called? Didn't you know we could work this thing out together?"

ILLUSTRATION
The originator of a new religion came to the great French diplomat- statesman Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Perigord and complained that he could not make any converts. "What would you suggest I do?" he asked. "I should recommend," said Talleyrand, "that you get yourself crucified, and then die, but be sure to rise again the third day." Christianity stands on the Cross and Resurrection.

C.    The Cross Reveals Our God as a . . Merciful God.     (Col 2:14 NASB)
"having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us and which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

D. The Cross Reveals Our God as a . . Loving God     (John 3:16 NASB)
"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.

(Rom 5:8 NASB) But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

I remember my pastor during an all night prayer meeting crawling around on his knees and embracing each pew.   He loved the Lost.

APPLICATION

Brag on the Cross Because trhe Cross Reveals the . . Person of Our God.

2.    Because the Cross Reveals the . . Pardon of Our God.   v 14

14 But may it never be that I should boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

EXPLANATION

A. The Pardoned Is . . Within Christ.    (Isa 53:6 NASB)
"All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him. (Col 1:20 NASB) and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.

B.    The Pardoned Is . . Without Condemnation.    Rom 8:33-34
"33 Who will bring a charge against God's elect? God is the one who justifies; 34 who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.

ILLUSTRATION
An individual Christian continued to have guilt and Condemnation from past sin. They just seemed not to gain victory. Satan used the ghost of past sin to cripple the witness of this Christian.

A pastor asked "have you confessed this sin to the Lord." The answer came "yes 10,000 times. The pastor told this person "one time in sincerity and belief was enough." Then he read this scripture and ask this person to claim victory.

(Rom 8:33-34 NASB) Who will bring a charge against God's elect? God is the one who justifies;
34 who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.

ILLUSTRATION        Title: The Cross that Frees
While taking a prisoner from a Guelph, Ontario, correctional center to be arraigned on charges of attempted armed robbery, police constable John Bolton noticed a cross around the neck of the convict. Knowing the man was not religious, he took a closer look. The prisoner attempted to conceal something protruding from the top of the cross.

When questioned, he said it was a good luck charm designed to look like a spoon for sniffing cocaine. But Constable Bolton was sure it looked like a handcuff key. By experimentation he found that the protuberance would open most handcuffs. The discovery led to the exposure of an attempt by prisoners in the correctional center to make a number of these cross-keys.

There is a cross that sets men free, free from the bondage of the law, and that cross is the cross of Calvary. Unfortunately many are more concerned about freedom for the body than they are about freedom for the soul. Whether inside or outside prison, all men need the cross that sets us free.

APPLICATION

Brag on the Cross Because the Cross Reveals the . . Pardon of Our God.

3.    Because the Cross Reveals the . . Power of Our God.   1 Cor. 1:18

For the word of the cross is to those who are perishing foolishness, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. NAS

EXPLANATION

A.    The Power of Our God To . . Fulfill His Promises.

Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel."

B.    The Power of Our God To . . Free His People.

        1.    Free His People from . . Sin.    Rom 7:24
"Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? 1 Cor 1:18 For the word of the cross is to those who are perishing foolishness, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. Rev 12:11 "And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even to death.

        2.    Free His People to . . Serve.

ILLUSTRATION # 1
In its column, "You Asked Us," the Canadian Magazine recently dealt with Hitler's use of the swastika. Included in their article was the following statement.

In the end, if his National Reich Church had been established, the swastika would have replaced the cross. Point 30 of the proposed National Reich Church's 30-point program, drawn up during the war, read: "On the day of its foundation, the Christian cross must be removed from all churches, cathedrals, and chapels.... It must be superseded by the only unconquerable symbol, the swastika."

History is the commentary on the folly of Hitler's dreams and on the futility of all who would seek to destroy the Church of Christ.

ILLUSTRATION # 2
The Cross was not allowed on any of the buildings in Communist Russia.   They built a large governmental building with a round glass tower.  The reflection of the sun caused a shape of the cross
to be seen in every direction.  HE CAN NOT BE HID.

APPLICATION

Brag on the cross because the Cross Reveals the . . Power of Our God.

4.    Because the Cross Reveals the . . Purpose of Our God.

EXPLANATION

A.    The Purpose of Our God To Deliver Us from . . Hell.    1Thes 1:10
and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, {that is} Jesus, who delivers us from the wrath to come. (NAS)

B.    The Purpose of Our God To Deliver Us to . . Heaven. 1 Pet 1:4
to {obtain} an inheritance {which is} imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, (NAS) Luke 23:43 And He said to him, "Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise."(NAS)

ILLUSTRATION
I read the story recently of how Louis XII of France treated his enemies after he ascended to the throne. Before coming to power, he had been cast into prison and kept in chains. Later when he did become king, he was urged to seek revenge but he refused. Instead, he prepared a scroll on which he listed all who had perpetrated crimes against him. Behind every man's name he placed a cross in red ink.

When the guilty heard about this, they feared for their lives and fled. Then the king explained, "The cross which I drew beside each name was not a sign of punishment, but a pledge of forgiveness extended for the sake of the crucified Savior, who upon His cross forgave His enemies and prayed for them."
