He . . . called me through His Grace, . . . to reveal His Son
in me, that I might preach Him . . . "  Gal 1:15b-16a

Command One: Concerns Number One

Exodus 20:1-3

Ex 20:1-3 NKJV

20 1 And God spoke all these words, saying: 2 "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 "You shall have no other gods before Me.

Ex 20:1-3 NAS

Then God spoke all these words, saying, 2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 3 "You shall have no other gods before Me.

Ex 20:1-3 NLB

1 Then God gave the people all these instructions: 2 "I am the Lord your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery. 3 "You must not have any other god but me.

Some say the Ten Commandments are out of date. They are out of date like 10 numbers (1-9 and zero) can no longer serve the needs of mathematics. Or like 26 letters can no longer meet the needs of our language. I have over 1,500 books in my office, all of them use 26 letters.

To say the Ten commandments are out of date is to say 10 numerals no longer work, and 26 letters are out of date.

The Ten Commandments are in two tablets. The first four commandments, or the First Table, taught the people how to relate to God.

The fifth through tenth commandments, the Second Table, taught them how to relate to one another. If we are willing to take these instructions seriously, they can teach us the same lessons today.

One thing of which we can be sure is that God had good reasons for giving this commandment. The Lord tells us specifically that His commands are never burdensome (1 John 5:3).

Did you ever receive a board game and begin playing it before you really read all the instructions? Then someone comes to your house and they play the game with you but they say, "hey you can't do what your doing. Then I say, "Well why not?" The answer comes look at the instructions."

Life can also be that way, as we go in what ever direction we choose without checking the instruction book. The Bible Is The Instruction Book.

God said “You must not have any God but Me.

And before an idol do not bend your knee

Do not take my name in vain, And do not the day of rest profane.

Give both your parents the honor due, seek to eliminate family strife
Do not murder but seek to protect another’s life,

Abstain from sexual, immorality, Do your best to live in purity

Don’t steal from others and certainly not Me.

Do not make a wilful lie nor love it and,

What is thy neighbor's do not covet.

God The Father Spoke These Words.

45 Times in    Lev.    He says, “I am the Lord”

I don’t recall telling my children over and over again “I am your dad.” Israel forgot easily. How about us?

            1.         God Declared These Words So Does . . Creation

                                    2)        Intelligent Design.

Watch and Watch Maker. Because you see a watch you know there is a watch maker.

Dictionary assumes a compiler, and printer. There was not an explosion at the printers that produced it.

Ro 1:20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, NKJV

            2.         God Declared These Words So Does Our . . Conscience

                        a.         Universal Hunger for God because Conscience tells us there is a God.

            3.         God Declared These Words So Does . . Scripture.

                        1.         Simply declared without a detailed attempt to prove His existence. Gen. 1:1

Illustration    If you don't know GOD, don't make stupid remarks!!!!!!

A United States Marine was attending some college courses between assignments. He had completed missions in Iraq and Afghanistan . One of the courses had a professor who was an avowed atheist, and a member of the ACLU.

One day the professor shocked the class when he came in. He looked to the ceiling and flatly stated, GOD if you are real then I want you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you exactly 15 min.' The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a pin drop. Ten minutes went by and the professor proclaimed, 'Here I am GOD, I'm still waiting.'

It got down to the last couple of minutes when the Marine got out of his chair, went up to the professor, and cold-cocked him; knocking him off the platform. The professor was out cold. The Marine went back to his seat and sat there, silently.

The other students were shocked and stunned, and sat there looking on in silence. The professor eventually came to, shaken he, looked at the Marine and asked, 'What in the world is the matter with you? 'Why did you do that?'
The Marine calmly replied, 'GOD was too busy today protecting America 's soldiers who are protecting your right to say stupid stuff and act like a Fool. So He sent me.'

The classroom erupted in cheers!

            B.        The . . Decision Of These Words. 20:2b

2 "I am the Lord your God,. . .”

                        1.         He Chose The People of Israel.

                        2.         He Chose Us.

                                    a.         Do you believe God Chose You?

                                    b.         WE HAVE A CHOICE to make.

                            3.           Nothing in the other 9 commandments will command our attention if the very first and foundational commandment is not in place. We must make God the only God in our life, to offer up to Him the love and commitment we all too often show to the things of this world instead of Him.

                                           a. God will not be second fiddle in our hearts and lives.

                                           b. God will not accept anything less than top priority!

                            4.           If you were to judge your actions, where do you think God is in your heart?

                            5.           Would others look at our lives and accuse us of an absolute commitment to Christ or would they hardly even know that we are believers?

                            6.           Our top priority can be determined by our top commitment! Where does God show up in your life?

Who Is Number One?

1 And God spoke all these words, saying: 2 "I am the Lord your God,. . .”

Isa 43:10 "You are My witnesses," says the Lord,

"And My servant whom I have chosen, That you may know and believe Me, And understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, Nor shall there be after Me. NKJV

Alan Keyes who ran for President in 2004 regularly says, “There Is A God, and you are not Him.” In the text God affirms who He is.

Jos 24:15b “But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

“. . . who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the  house of bondage.”

                        1.         Taking them out of Egypt.

                        2.         Out of bondage.

                        3.         HAS GOD DELIVERED YOU?

            B.        Shares The . . Demonstration Of God. Exo. 10:2

Ex 10:2 and that you may tell in the hearing of your son and your son's son the mighty things I have done in Egypt, and My signs which I have done among them, that you may know that I am the Lord." NKJV

Jos 24:17 for the Lord our God is He who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, who did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way that we went and among all the people through whom we passed. NKJV

God's Ten Plagues Against Egypt and Her gods.

1. Water to Blood
7:19 And the LORD spake unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Take thy rod, and stretch out thine hand upon the waters of Egypt, upon their streams, upon their rivers, and upon their ponds, and upon all their pools of water, that they may become blood; and that there may be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, both in vessels of wood, and in vessels of stone.

2. Frogs
8:2 And if thou refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite all thy borders with frogs:
8:3 And the river shall bring forth frogs abundantly, which shall go up and come into thine house, and into thy bedchamber, and upon thy bed, and into the house of thy servants, and upon thy people, and into thine ovens, and into thy kneading troughs:
8:4 And the frogs shall come up both on thee, and upon thy people, and upon all thy servants.

3. Gnats or Lice
8:16 And the LORD said unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Stretch out thy rod, and smite the dust of the land, that it may become lice throughout all the land of Egypt.

4. Flies
8:21 Else, if thou wilt not let my people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies upon thee, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people, and into thy houses: and the houses of the Egyptians shall be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground whereon they are.

5. Livestock Diseased
9:3 Behold, the hand of the LORD is upon thy cattle which is in the field, upon the horses, upon the asses, upon the camels, upon the oxen, and upon the sheep: there shall be a very grievous murrain.

6. Boils
9:8 And the LORD said unto Moses and unto Aaron, Take to you handfuls of ashes of the furnace, and let Moses sprinkle it toward the heaven in the sight of Pharaoh.
9:9 And it shall become small dust in all the land of Egypt, and shall be a boil breaking forth with blains upon man, and upon beast, throughout all the land of Egypt.

7. Thunder and Hail
9:18 Behold, to morrow about this time I will cause it to rain a very grievous hail, such as hath not been in Egypt since the foundation thereof even until now.

8. Locusts
10:4 Else, if thou refuse to let my people go, behold, to morrow will I bring the locusts into thy coast:
10:5 And they shall cover the face of the earth, that one cannot be able to see the earth: and they shall eat the residue of that which is escaped, which remaineth unto you from the hail, and shall eat every tree which groweth for you out of the field.

9. Darkness
10:21 And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt.
10:22 And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days

10. Death of the Firstborn
11:4 And Moses said, Thus saith the LORD, About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt:
11:5 And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the first born of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even unto the firstborn of the maidservant that is behind the mill; and all the firstborn of beasts.

3.       Command One . . Demands The Choice Number One Requires. 20:3

3 "You shall have no other gods before Me.

A.        The . . Intolerance Of The Demand.. 20:3a

"You shall have no other gods before Me.

            1.         Intolerant because it benefits us.

B.        The . . Inference Of The Demand. 20:3a

"You shall have no other gods before Me.

            1.         If God is #1, There is no need for any other god.

A week ago on Friday on the way home from seeing Oresta at the hospital I stopped at Wal-Mart in Desloge to get gas. The young lady at the cash register ask “how are you doing,” and I then asked her how she was doing and she said, “I am fine.” I asked her, “what makes you fine.” And she quickly and firmly said, “Jesus.” I then said, “are you going to tell me you know Jesus.” She said, “oh yes I do.” She further said, “if you know Jesus He makes every thing better.” I BELIEVE THAT! This command emphasizes that.

If a person is right with God they have God and His Word in the right place. He is Number One. Command One Concerns Number One.

Da 2:46 The king answered Daniel, and said, "Truly your God is the God of gods, the Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, since you could reveal this secret." NKJV

Da 3:29 Therefore I make a decree that any people, nation, or language which speaks anything amiss against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made an ash heap; because there is no other God who can deliver like this." NKJV

John 1:17, “For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.”

Jeremiah prophesied a day when the law of God would be found, not just on stone tablets, but written on the human heart (Jeremiah 31:33).

Let me state the matter as clearly as I can. We are not saved by keeping the Ten Commandments. I think Paul settles that matter conclusively in the book of Romans. No one will get to heaven by keeping the Ten Commandments because no one can keep them perfectly!
