The Sabbath Principals
NKJV 8 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

1. The Sabbath Principal Of . . Worship. 20:8
8 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
A. A Day Of Worship with . . Remembrance.
1. Remembers Our Creator.
a. He Created Everything. Ge 1:1
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. NKJV
1:1 created. No other cosmogony, whether in ancient paganism or modern naturalism, even mentions the absolute origin of the universe. All begin with the space/time/matter universe, already existing in a primeval state of chaos, then attempt to speculate how it might have evolved into its present form. Defenders Bible
Ex. 20:11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. NKJV
2. The Height of Creation: Mankind.
While the Sabbath was the last day of creation for God, it was man's first day of existence with God. We begin our week with worship and then enter the week with work. God came first!
a. Mankind Is A Special Creation. Ge 1:26, 31; 2:1-3
26 Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." . . .
31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
The Garden of Eden 2 Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. 2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made. NKJV
2. Remembers God’s Deliverance.
Ex 20:2 "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. NKJV
Dt 5:15 And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. NKJV
B. A Day Of Worship with . . Relationships.
1. Seek To Know God.
2 Ch 7:14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. NKJV
Pr 2:2-3 2 My son, if you receive my words, And treasure my commands within you, 2 So that you incline your ear to wisdom, And apply your heart to understanding; 3 Yes, if you cry out for discernment, And lift up your voice for understanding, NKJV
Pr 3:9-11 9 Honor the Lord with your possessions, And with the firstfruits of all your increase; 10 So your barns will be filled with plenty, And your vats will overflow with new wine.
11 My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor detest His correction; NKJV
Dt 4:29 But from there you will seek the Lord your God, and you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul. NKJV
Jn 6:27 27 Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him."
C. A Day Of Worship with . . Repetition.
Nu 15:17 Again the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, NKJV
John. 3:1 Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, NKJV
Worship renews the spirit as sleep renews the body.
Richard Clarke Cabot (1868-1939)
In the movie Karate Kid, young Daniel asks Mister Miagi to teach him karate. Miagi agrees under one condition: Daniel must submit totally to his instruction and never question his methods. Daniel shows up the next day eager to learn. To his chagrin, Mister Miagi has him paint a fence. Miagi demonstrates the precise motion for the job: up and down, up and down. Daniel takes days to finish the job. Next, Miagi has him scrub the deck using a prescribed stroke. Again the job takes days. Daniel wonders, What does this have to do with karate? but he says nothing. Next, Miagi tells Daniel to wash and wax three weather-beaten cars and again prescribes the motion. Finally, Daniel reaches his limit: "I thought you were going to teach me karate, but all you have done is have me do your unwanted chores!" Daniel has broken Miagi's one condition, and the old man's face pulses with anger. "I have been teaching you karate! Defend yourself!" Miagi thrusts his arm at Daniel, who instinctively defends himself with an arm motion exactly like that used in one of his chores. Miagi unleashes a vicious kick, and again Daniel averts the blow with a motion used in his chores. After Daniel successfully defends himself from several more blows, Miagi simply walks away, leaving Daniel to discover what the master had known all along: skill comes from repeating the correct but seemingly mundane actions. The same is true of godliness. -- Duke Winser, El Segundo, California. Leadership, Vol. 16, no. 4.
"Anybody can observe the Sabbath but making it holy surely takes the rest of the week." We can't set aside one day for God and then live godless lives the other six.

A. Work Is Commanded. 20:9a
9a “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, . . .”
1. The 4th commandment requires Worship and Work.
2. A Society that fails to realize that their citizen's sense of self respect comes only from a good relationship with their work.
3. The Old Testament welfare system is a good example here of both:
a. The rich had a responsibility to them by leaving the corners of their fields for the poor to glean.
b. There was responsibility and dignity for both the rich and the poor. Each had to DO something.
B. Work Is Crucial. 20:9
9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, . . .
Contrary to popular belief, work is not a part of the curse! Before man sinned, he was given work to do, Gen. 2:15.
Once when mules were used in great numbers in the coal mines, a noticed that there were great numbers of these animals in pastures along the way, and asked the reason for this. "To keep them from going blind," he was told. "If they are not brought up from underground at least one day in the week they will eventually lose their eyesight. So they are brought up each Sunday to keep them from going blind.
The Ice Cream Sundae was born out of a Sabbath Law not to sell soda water on Sunday. A Man decided to put ice cream chocolate and cherries and call it the “Sunday.” This new dish became so popular that people began asking for a "Sunday." Some objected and they changed the spelling to "Sundae" and that’s what it’s been called ever since. So, next time you eat one, remember that the delicious dessert you are eating resulted from some people who wanted to respect God’s day and others who were looking for a loophole.)

Ron Mehl wrote a book about the commands and shares that his wife Joyce loves shoes. And she says she has discovered that if she wears one pair of shoes every day it will last six months. But if she has two pairs and alternates wearing them every other day, both pairs will last two years. She says this is because the leather needs to rest and when it rests it lasts longer.
I read this week that Bowling alleys have discovered that bowling pins last longer if they are given a rest. For this reason most alleys have two full sets of pins and every week they remove one set from service, place them on the shelf and use the other set. They have ascertained that if wooden pins don't "rest" they lose their vitality and won't bounce around as much when hit by a bowling ball.
A study was done a few years ago by the U.S. Army in which they observed several soldiers in various conditions to determine at what stage these individuals achieved the maximum level of output. The Army discovered that after 7 consecutive days of hard work, each soldier's performance dropped. But the most interesting discovery the army made was that....even though the soldiers' performance level dropped, the soldiers themselves were unaware of it.
They thought they were still operating at maximum level. Maybe this is why so many of us think we don't need to rest....that it is somehow LAZY to take a break every once in a while. But you know as we examine the life of Christ, we see that during His three year ministry the Son of God took 10 "vacations" or "retreats" and He always observed the Sabbath.
