Whose Your Father?

God The Father Of Truth;   Or Satan The Father Of Lies

Ex 20:16

C:\Commandments 2009\Command-9TAB.USE.wpd April 26, 2009

"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Introduction

What is a lie? A false statement deliberately presented as being true; a falsehood.

I want you to raise your hand if you have ever told a lie.

Now I want you to raise your hand if you have never ever told a lie. This morning I will preach from the ninth commandment. I will obviously be speaking to meet a need every person.

I dare say no one had to be taught to lie. It just come naturally.

Illustration

A minister noticed a group of boys standing around a small stray dog. "What are you doing, boys?" "Telling lies," said one of the boys. "The one who tells the biggest lie gets the dog." "Why, when I was your age," the shocked minister said, "I never ever thought of telling a lie." The boys looked at one another, a little crestfallen. Finally one of them shrugged and said, "I guess he wins the dog." --James S. Hewett,

1.   Satan Is A Liar And The Father Of Lies.

Jn 8:44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. NKJV

A.   His First Activity He Denied God’s Word. Ge 3:3-6

3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the

garden, God has said, 'You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch

it, lest you die.'" 4 Then the serpent said to the woman, "You

will not surely die. 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of

it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing

       good and evil." NKJV

       1.    Tempted with a lie that denied The Word Of God.

       2.    Eve believed a Lie and acted disobeyed because of it.

You can see this in Genesis 3. The first lie led to the downfall of the first man.

Satan Lied about God's Word.

Satan Lied about God's Warning.

Satan Lied about God's Wisdom.

B.   His Second Activity He Inspired Murder and A Lie.

Ge 4:8-9 8 Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him. 9 Then the Lord said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?" He said, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?" NKJV

       1.    Cain just flat out lied, and said, “I do not know.”

              God hates lying.

2.   Jesus Is Truth And The Father Of Truth.

A.   The Bible Calls Jesus Truth. Jn. 1:14, 17

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.. . . 17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. NKJV

Jn 14:6 "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. NKJV

Eph 4:21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: NKJV

B.   The Bible Uses The Word Pure As It Speaks About God’s Truth. Pr 30:5-6

5 Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. 6 Do not add to His words, Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar. NKJV

C.   Jesus Called God’s Word Truth. John 17:17

17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. NKJV

D.   God Hates A Lying Tongue. Pr 6:16-17a

16 These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: 17 A proud look, A lying tongue, . . .” NKJV

Pr 12:22 Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, But those who deal truthfully are His delight. NKJV

"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

3.   How Is This Commandment Broken?.

A.   Just Flat Out Lie.     Pr 14:5

A faithful witness does not lie, But a false witness will utter lies.

Rv 21:8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death." NKJV

B.   Lies Of Flattery. Ps 12:2-4

2 They speak idly everyone with his neighbor; With flattering lips and a double heart they speak. 3 May the Lord cut off all flattering lips, And the tongue that speaks proud things, 4 Who have said, "With our tongue we will prevail; Our lips are our own; Who is lord over us?" NKJV

Ps 55:21 The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, But war was in his heart; His words were softer than oil, Yet they were drawn swords. NKJV

Illustration  Maybe not wise to tell all the truthful thoughts You Have.

The editor of a small-town newspaper grew tired of being called a liar, and announced that he would tell the truth in the future. The next issue contained the following item: "Married--Miss Sylvan Rhodes and James Collins, last Saturday at the Baptist parsonage, by the Rev. J. Gordon.

The bride is a very ordinary town girl, who doesn't know any more about cooking than a jackrabbit, and never helped her mother three days in her life. She is not a beauty by any means and has a gait like a duck. The groom is an up-to-date loafer. He has been living off the old folks at home all his life and is now worth shucks. It will be a hard life." --James S. Hewett,

C.   Lies Of Slander. Pr 10:18

18 Whoever hides hatred has lying lips, And whoever spreads slander is a fool. NKJV

D. Lies Of Self-deception. 1 Co 3:18

18 Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise.

1 Jn 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. NKJV

A Preacher rather haughtily asked his wife, “I wonder how many great preachers there are in this world.” His wife said I don’t really know but most likely one less that you think.

E.   Lies of Hypocrisy. 1 Ti 4:2

2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, NKJV

F. Keeping Quiet When You Know the Truth. Est 4:14

14 For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father's house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?" NKJV

G.   Lying to God. Ac 5:3-5

3 But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? 4 While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God."

5 Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last. So great fear came upon all those who heard these things.

"Sin has many tools, but a lie is the handle that fits them all." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894)

"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

4.   Why Is This Sin So Terrible?

       1.    It Weakens Government.

       2.    It Breaks Up Homes.

       3.    It Can Split A Church.

       4.    It Hurts human relationship.

       6.    It Sears A Conscience.

       7.    It May Lead A Person To Hell.

We may say it very simply:

Truth leads to heaven … for God is truth.

Lying leads to hell … because Satan is the father of lies.

5.   What This Command Demands.

A. Truthfulness in our Words

B. Honesty in our Relationships

C. Integrity in our Lifestyle

"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

6.   How To Improve At Keeping This Command.

A.    Practice Silence

Proverbs 10:19 says, “Where words are many, sin is not absent; but he who holds his tongue is wise.”

Proverbs 11:12 declares, “A man of understanding holds his tongue.”

Proverbs 13:3 adds, “He who guards his tongue guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.”

Proverbs 21:23 tells us that “He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity.”

Speak less and you will speak more truthfully. The more you say, the more likely you are to exaggerate, to stretch the truth.

Maybe you will need to Pray while listening?

Pray for wisdom!

Pray for God’s guidance!

Pray for understanding!

Pray for God’s love to be manifested in your speech!

B.   Practice Personal Accountability. Ps 19:14

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer. NKJV

Truth-telling is made easier in the presence of a few caring friends.

When Jesus stood before Pilate, he declared,

Jn 18:37 37 Pilate therefore said to Him, "Are You a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice." NKJV

There is an acrostic, which may help us when it comes to speaking properly. It comes from the word TRUTH.

*T - Is it True?

*R - Is it Required?

*U - Is it Uplifting?

*T - Is it Thoughtful and Tender?

*H - Is it Harmful?

Why do we lie? For one of three reasons.

"Lack of Commitment"

              "Lack of Confidence"

                            "Lack of Conversion"

—To know Jesus is to know the Truth.

—To follow Jesus is to follow the Truth.

—To believe in Jesus is to believe the Truth.

—To love Jesus is to love the Truth.

Do You Love The Lord Jesus?
