When, Why, Who, What, Questions In Doctrinal Matters

Gal. 2:1-10

C:\JAMMc2011\Gal2-TABnew.SER.wpd February 20, 2011

1 Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and also took Titus with me. 2 And I went up by revelation, and communicated to them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to those who were of reputation, lest by any means I might run, or had run, in vain. 3 Yet not even Titus who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised. 4 And this occurred because of false brethren secretly brought in (who came in by stealth to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage),

5 to whom we did not yield submission even for an hour, that the truth of the gospel might continue with you. 6 But from those who seemed to be something--whatever they were, it makes no difference to me; God shows personal favoritism to no man--for those who seemed to be something added nothing to me.

7 But on the contrary, when they saw that the gospel for the uncircumcised had been committed to me, as the gospel for the circumcised was to Peter 8 (for He who worked effectively in Peter for the apostleship to the circumcised also worked effectively in me toward the Gentiles), 9 and when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that had been given to me, they gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.

10 They desired only that we should remember the poor, the very thing which I also was eager to do.

Introduction

Doctrinal matters need to be checked in a central location. Paul went to Jerusalem. If we needed to check on doctrinal matters we would need to go to the associational office and the state convention office in Jefferson City.

On a few occasions churches have been removed from the associational list of churches and even the state convention list of churches because of doctrinal variations. Baptist do not practice speaking in tongues. Very few of our churches practice having women as their senior pastor. FBC Sikeston and FBC Cape Girardeau were removed from the associational fellowship because of practicing the ordination of women for the pastorate. A church in Springfield was removed for having practices more like a Pentecostal Church than a Baptist Church

Paul wanted to check himself out and clarify his practice of preaching to the Gentiles. He wanted a statement from the Jerusalem Church so he went up to Jerusalem.

A.        The # 1 Reason Mentioned for When Paul Went To . . Jerusalem. v1

1 Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and also took Titus with me.

            1.         He Went Again.

            2.         First Trip recorded in Acts 9:26-31

26 And when Saul had come to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples; but they were all afraid of him, and did not believe that he was a disciple. 27 But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. And he declared to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, and that He had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus. 28 So he was with them at Jerusalem, coming in and going out. 29 And he spoke boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus and disputed against the Hellenists, but they attempted to kill him. 30 When the brethren found out, they brought him down to Caesarea and sent him out to Tarsus. NKJV

            a.         Barnabas Befriended Paul Going To Jerusalem.

                        1)        Do You Have Friends? How do you get friends?

                        2)        Barnabas initiated a friendship with Paul.

                        3)        Sometimes to have a friend you must be a friend.

                                    a)        My Granddaughter, short and tiny.

                        3)        The Pastor’s wife.

                                    a)        Some churches have been difficult for her.

                                    b)        Not this one Jennete Turnbough on the Pastor Search Committee.

                                    c)        Many ladies may have the same problem.

                        4)        Barnabas example is a good one.

B.        The # 2 Reason Mentioned for When Paul Went To . . Jerusalem. v2a

2 And I went up by revelation,

            1.         When God tells you to go —GO!

                        a.         An Additional Thought.         1 Peter 3:15

15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always

be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason

for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; NKJV

Illustration                Get It In Writing

A young man loaned an acquaintance $500, but failed to get the borrower's signature on a receipt. When the guy hadn't paid him back a year later, he realized he had probably lost the money due to lack of proof. He asked his father what to do. "The answer is simple," his father said. "Just write him and say you need the $1,000 you loaned him. "You mean $500," his son replied. "No, you need to say $1,000. He'll immediately write back that he only owes you $500, and then you'll have it in writing!"

B.        The Number Two Reason To Go. v 2 b

v 2b . . . and communicated to them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to those who were of reputation, lest by any means I might run, or had run, in vain.

            1.         Some were questioning Paul’s Gospel.

            2.         Some Insisted Gentile Men Needed To Be Circumcised.

THE PRACTICE OF CIRCUMCISION

A. IN THE OLD TESTAMENT...

            1.         As a sign of a covenant, it began with Abraham -

                        Gen 17:9-14, 2 3-27 cf. Ro 4:11

            2.         It continued with Isaac, Jacob and his sons - Gen 21:4; 34: 14-17

             3.         Moses circumcised his sons, and gave the ordinance to

                        Israel - Exo 4:26; cf. Jn 7:22 3.

It was required to observe the Passover - Exo 12:48

            4.         Male children were to be circumcised the eighth day -

                        Lev 12: 1-3

             5.         The Jews born in the wilderness had not been

circumcised, but were after they crossed the Jordan

                        River - Josh 5:1-8 B.

IN THE NEW TESTAMENT...

            1.         John the Baptist was circumcised as an infant - Lk 1:59

            2.         Jesus was likewise circumcised on the eighth day -

                        Lk. 2:21

             3.        It became an issue when the gospel was first preached to Gentiles - Ac 11:1-3

                        IT WAS A JEWISH REQUIREMENT

                        NOT A CHRISTIAN REQUIREMENT

Illustration    To have unquestioned reliance upon another can be embarrassing..

I was reminded of this recently when I came across an interesting item about President Coolidge. Once he invited some friends from Vermont to dine at the White House. They were worried about their table manners, so they decided to do everything their host did. All went well until coffee was served. Coolidge poured his into the saucer. The guests did the same. The President added sugar and cream. So did the visitors. Then Coolidge leaned over and placed his saucer on the floor for the cat.

I heard James Dobson relate that he would not sit silent in a church if the gospel message were compromised. Paul caused some excitement in the Jerusalem church with his stand for the Gospel. We can be great full today for the stand he took.

Illustration    A Miss America.

Debbye Turner, says she became a follower of Christ at age 7. Originally from Jonesboro, Arkansas, she is the third black and the first Miss Missouri to wear the crown. Her goal is to become a veterinarian. She credits her parents with much of her success. Her mother, a lay evangelistic worker, kept a marimba in the dining room and encouraged her to master it.

She thinks race relations could be improved if Americans taught their "youth from a very young age to ignore the exterior of a person and look at the substance of that person inside."
