The Gospel

1 Cor. 15:1-4 and Other Verses

1 Cor 15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you — unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, NKJV

Introduction

The word gospel means “good news.” Jesus makes His Gospel very good news. His gospel enables a transformed life. I want to bring out several facets of Jesus’ Gospel.

1.   Preservation . . and The Gospel. 1 Cor 15:1-4

1 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the

gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you — unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, NKJV

       A.   Preserve The Gospel Ingredient of The . . Death Of Christ. v 3b

“. . . that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,

       B.   Preserve The Gospel Ingredient of The . . Burial Of Christ. v 4a

4 and that He was buried,. . . “

       C.   Preserve The Gospel Ingredient of The . . Resurrection Of Christ. v 4a

“. . . and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,

       D.   Preserve The Gospel Ingredient of The . . Place To Stand. v 1

“. . . which also you received and in which you stand,.

       E.   Preserve The Gospel Ingredient of . . Salvation. v 2

2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you — unless you believed in vain.

Do you know why several of the Hidden (or False) Gospels were refused entrance into our Bible?

Books such as the DaVinci Code relied on; were refused acceptance into the Books of the Bible. Why,

because they do not speak of the Gospel. They do not mention the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. They do not speak to salvation through the Gospel Message.

Application        Gal 1:6-7

I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel , 7 . . . there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ.

We need to be concerned about the preservation of the Gospel.

2.   Power . . and The Gospel? Rom 1:15-16

15 So, as much as is in me, I am ready to preach the gospel to you who are in Rome also. 16 The Just Live by Faith For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. NKJV

       A.   The . . Innate Power of Salvation. v 16 b

“. . . for it is the power of God to

    salvation for everyone who believes,

       B.   The . . Inclusive Power of Salvation. v 16 c

“. . . for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

Illustration

When one visits the sites in Israel where Christ lived and died on this earth you will see many nations represented. Believers from all over the world come to see where Christ ministered, died and arose. It is a testimony to the Power of the Gospel of Christ.

Application

We must emphasize the . . Power of The Gospel?

3.    Preaching. . and The Gospel. Rom 15:20-21

       A.   Sent . . To Preach The Gospel.

1 Cor 1:17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel , not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect.

       B.   The Aim . . To Preach The Gospel. Rom 15:20-21

20 And so I have made it my aim to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build on another man's foundation,

       C.   The Need . . To Preach The Gospel. 1 Cor. 9:16-18

16 For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for necessity is laid upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel !

Application

We must never attend a church that does not consistently preach the gospel. We need churches that expect people to get saved.

2 Cor 9:13 while, through the proof of this ministry, they glorify God for the obedience of your confession to the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal sharing with them and all men,

We must always be ready to defend the Gospel.

Phil 1:7 just as it is right for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart, inasmuch as both in my chains and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel , you all are partakers with me of grace. NKJV

4.   Professing . . and The Gospel. Eph 1:13

      A.   We Must Profess . . The Gospel for Salvation.

13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard

the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, NKJV

       B.   Professed We Possess . . The Gospel of Salvation.

              Eph 6:15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

1 Thess 2:4 But as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel , even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who tests our hearts. NKJV

Illustration         UNBELIEF CONFIRMS THE TRUTH

Bob Morey, who has an apologetics ministry in Southern California, was once asked by an aggressive atheist to prove the Bible's truthfulness. Bob responded, "You prove the Bible to me every time you open your mouth."

Shocked, she asked. “ow this could be true.” He asked her, "Do you fear God?" She answered, "No." "Well," he said, "you just proved that Romans 3:18 is true. 'There is no fear of God before their eyes.'"

He proceeded, "Is the gospel foolishness to you?" "Yes!" He explained, "Well, you just proved 1 Corinthians 1:18. 'The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing.'"

He continued, "Do you want your own way instead of living according to God's way?" She retorted, "I don't want God's way-I'll do as I please!"

He responded, "Well, you just proved Isaiah 53:6. 'Each of us has turned to his own way.' Every time you open your mouth you confirm the Bible by saying what it said you would say.

Thank you for making me a stronger Christian."

Even unbelief confirms the truth of what we believe! Bill White, Paramount, California, from a personal conversation with Bob Morey in September 2001

Application

We Must Profess . . The Gospel for Salvation.

5.    Punishment . . and the Gospel. 2 Thess 1:7-10

       A.   Punishment for . . Rejecting the Gospel.

7 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 10 when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed. NKJV

       B.   Punishment for . . Disobedience To the Gospel.

1 Peter 4:17 For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? NKJV

Heb 4:2 For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. NKJV

Illustration         The Chess Player Painting

J. Oswald Sanders reports that years ago, Paul Morphy was the world’s champion chess player when he was invited by a friend to look at a valuable painting titled, “The Chess Player.”

In the painting, Satan was represented as playing chess with a young man, the stake being the young man’s soul. The game had reached the stage where it was the young man’s move; but he was checkmated. There was no move he could make which would not mean defeat for him and so the strong feature of the picture was

the look of utter despair on the young man’s face as he realized that his soul was lost.

Morphy, who knew more about chess than the artist, studied the picture for a time, then called for a chessboard and pieces. Placing them in exactly the same position as they were in the painting, he said, “I’ll take the young man’s place and make the move.” Then he made the move which would have set the young man free.
