Have You Heard About The Holy Spirit? # 1

Acts 19:1-6

1 And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples 2 he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" So they said to him, "We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit." 3 And he said to them, "Into what then were you baptized?" So they said, "Into John's baptism." 4 Then Paul said, "John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus." 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. NKJV

Introduction  Altered from Dwelling On High, Catching The Vision Of: Look And Live

John McNeil tells the story of one of his friends who had raised an eagle with the turkeys about the barnyard and for this reason the eagle had never used its power of flight nor had it understood its ability to soar in the heavens.

The friend made up his mind to move to another part of the country. He had sold his other possessions, but did not care to sell the eagle nor to give it away, and so he determined to teach it the art of flight. He lifted it up in his hands, held it for a moment, but the eagle fell quickly to the ground. He threw it above his head, but the fall was only the more severe, and at last in desperation he put it upon the fence and was holding it for a moment, when by chance the eagle spotted another Eagle. Its eyes had ever been turned downward and it seemed to be in ignorance of who it was. Suddenly it pushed out one wing, then another, lifted its head, and with a shriek and a spring bounded away from the fence, soared higher and higher until it was lost in the very face of the sun.

Too many Christians many dwell with the turkeys, when they are made to soar with the Eagles, a big cause of that fact is a lack of knowledge. So follow as We note many of the works the Holy Spirit does for us, and In Us.

1.       Have You Heard The Holy Spirit . . Draws People To Jesus?

“. . . So they said to him, "We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit. " Acts 19:2b

            A.        The Holy Spirit’s . . Essential Drawing.

John 6:44 No one can come to Me unless the Father

who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. NKJV

Since this is Presidents Day Weekend have you heard President Lincoln was converted shortly after he delivered the Gettysburg Address? He had been thinking about Heaven, and Christ. At the cemetery he saw all the rows of white crosses, and God used that scene to draw him to the cross of Christ.

            B.        The Holy Spirit’s . . Elite Drawing.

John 6:65 And He said, "Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father." NKJV

Illustration    CHOICE, Choosing Christ, Riches, Bible: A WISE CHOICE

On his birthday, a very wealthy man in London called his servants together to give them some presents. He had a Bible and some twenty-dollar notes. The servants were to make a choice between the Bible and the notes.

First came the gardener, who said, "I would like to have the Bible, but my wife is very sick and I need the money. I will take the note."

The cook said, "I can't read, so the Bible would not do me any good. Give me the money."

The coachman said, "I would appreciate having the Bible, but I have some pressing obligations. I believe the money will help me more."

Finally the errand boy came for his gift. The old gentleman asked, "Son, which will you take?"

The boy replied, "I really need the money, but my mother, who has gone to heaven, used to read to me from the Bible. I will take that"

The old gentleman was very much pleased with this choice. As he handed the good Book to the boy, he said, "God bless you, my son, for your wise choice. I present this Book to you with all it contains."

All the servants were still sitting in the presence of their master. The boy slowly opened the pages of the Book. A shining twenty dollar gold piece dropped out This the boy picked up and handed to the donor of the Book.

"No," said the old man, "did I not give you the Book with all that it contained?" The boy continued to turn the pages, and all along through the Book he found large bank notes. When these were counted, they proved to be quite a fortune. The other servants sat back, quite. The boy’s choice had meant more than he had known. By William Moses Tidwell, "

So it is when one is drawn to take Christ. It means salvation, peace and happiness in this world and a Heavenly Home in the better world through all eternity.

All of this because the Holy Spirit Drew us to Christ

2.       Have You Heard The Holy Spirit . . Dwells In Believers?

“. . . So they said to him, "We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit." Acts 19:2b

            A.        The Holy Spirit Dwells In Believers . . Immediately At Conversion.

Acts 2:38        Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one

of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. NKJV

            B.        Dwells In Believers . . Imparting Assurance of Salvation. Rom 8:9-11

9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. 10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. NKJV

Presidents Lincoln’s son died, and he threw him into great depression. He took every Thursday as a day of mourning, and isolated himself. A minister came to see him and asked “do you not know your son in alive and in heaven. The thought shook the President, and it seemed to awaken a spirit in him that completly changed his countenance. The Holy Spirit used this experience to draw the President out of despair.

            C.        Dwells In Believers As He . . Indwells The Believer As His Temple.

1 Cor 6:19-20 19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's. NKJV

Illustration     Great Norwegian Explorer

Gordon Brownville’s SYMBOLS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT tells about the great Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, the first to discover the magnetic meridian of the North Pole and to discover the South Pole. On one of his trips, Amundsen took a homing pigeon with him. When he had finally reached the top of the world, he opened the bird’s cage and set it free. Imagine the delight of Amundsen’s wife, back in Norway, when she looked up from the doorway of her home and saw the pigeon circling in the sky above. No doubt she exclaimed, “He’s alive! My husband is still alive!”

So it was when Jesus ascended. He was gone, but the disciples clung to his promise to send them the Holy Spirit. What joy, then, when the dovelike Holy Spirit descended at Pentecost. The disciples had with them the continual reminder that Jesus was alive and victorious at the right of the Father. This continues to be the Spirit’s message. - Thomas Lindberg Source unknown

            D.        Dwells In Believers Becoming An . . Inventory (Reservoir) of the Holy Spirit.

John 7:38-39 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. NKJV

Since this is just 30 miles from us all of us share concern for this disaster.

Residents of Lesterville, Mo., on Thursday December 16, 2005 came to the aid of the family swept out of their beds the day before by a 1-billion-gallon torrent pouring down the side of Proffit Mountain.

Meanwhile, state inspectors examining the breach in the AmerenUE reservoir were dismayed to discover that the failed wall of the 90-foot-deep reservoir was constructed of rock and soil, not granite as they had believed.

That is a sad story, but Christians are a reservoir of the Holy Spirit. We spill over and cause good. In fact most of the time good is done in the community it will be include mostly Christian People.

3.       Have You Heard The Holy Spirit . . Directs Believers?

“. . . So they said to him, "We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit." Acts 19:2b

            A.        He Directs . . Accountable To His Nature.

Jn. 16:13a However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide

you into all truth;. . . “

A young lady wanted to attend a famous school so she sent in an application. A question on the application asked “are you a leader.” She was rather shy, and more of a follower but she was an honest young lady so she wrote “no I am more of a follower.” She mailed the letter and thought I will not be accepted because they want leaders. A reply came back accepting her into the school. It said we have received applications from 1452 leaders, and we felt it would be good to have at least one follower.

            B.        He Directs In The . . Authority of His Nature. John 16:13b

“. . . for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. NKJV

Several years ago in a communist country the believers gathered for worship even thought they were not supposed to participate in public worship. On one night their worship experience was interrupted by two fully armed police officers. The officers told every one who would not renounce the faith in Christ and die for Christ to leave the house. Some left. That gave the last chance to leave or die for their faith.

No one else left, the soldiers told the people to raise their hands, but not in fear, but in praise to Jesus. Shocked the believers learned these two soldiers were fellow believers. They told them they had learned not to trust anyone who would not die for Jesus.

Many times the story has been told throughout history even from non Christians that Christians die differently. Why is that so? I believe the Indwelling Holy Spirit make s the difference.
