The Three "I"s for the Bible.

2TI 3:16, 2 Peter 1:21

2TI 3:16

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;

2 Peter 1:21

for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

What do you believe about thge Bible? Is it the very word of God? How would you defend yor position? In recent years there has been much discussion related to the Bible in our Southern Baptist Convention.

The word "inerrancy" has surfaced as a by-word for the conservative researgence. Today I want to take three words that begin with the letter "I" and define the view held by the majority of Southern Baptist.

1.       The first . . . . "I" for the Bible is . . . INSPIRED.

2.       The Second . . "I" for the Bible is . . . INERRANT or INNERANTCY.

3.       The Third . . "I" for the Bible is . . . INFALLABLE.

1.      The first "I" of for the Bible is . . INSPIRED.

2TI 3:16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;

           A.      The . . MEANING of An Inspired Bible.    God is Author of Scripture.

                      1.        The New Testament Word.

Strong's # 2315 theopneustos (theh-op'-nyoo-stos); from 2316 4154;

2316 theos (theh'-os); the supreme Divinity;

4154 pneo (pneh'-o); a primary word; to breathe hard,

                      2.        The Old Testament Word.

Inspiration in the KJV. (no word inspired in the KJV)

Job 32:8 But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the                                                Almighty giveth them understanding. (KJV) Job 32:8 (NASB) "But it is a spirit in man, And the breath of the Almighty gives them understanding.

           B.      The . . METHOD of An Inspired Bible.

2 Peter 1:21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

Jeremiah 1:9          Then the LORD stretched out His hand and touched my mouth, and the LORD said to me, "Behold, I have put My words in your mouth.

Acts 1:16      "Brethren, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.

Revelation 14:13    And I heard a voice from heaven, saying, "Write, 'Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on!'" "Yes," says the Spirit, "that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow with them."

          C.      The . . MOTIVATION of An Inspired Bible.

Luke 24:32  And they said to one another, "Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He was explaining the Scriptures to us?"

Jeremiah 20:9        But if I say, "I will not remember Him Or speak anymore in His name," Then in my heart it becomes like a burning fire Shut up in my bones; And I am weary of holding <it> in, And I cannot endure <it>.

         Did you know East and West never meet? Did you know North and South do meet at the

North or South Poles?

          I think that can illustrate God's inspiration. God knew that but I doubt David knew it. But God inspired David to say in Psalms 103:12 (NASB) As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.

APPLICATION:               The Bible is the INSPIRED word of GOD.

2.      The Second "I" for the Bible is . . INERRANT.

Psalms 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, restoring the soul; The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.

PSA 119:160 The sum of Thy word is truth, And every one of Thy righteous ordinances is everlasting.

JOH 17:17 "Sanctify them in the truth; Thy word is truth.

Romans 7:12-14 (12) So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good. {13} Therefore did that which is good become <a cause of> death for me? May it never be! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by effecting my death through that which is good, that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful. {14} For we know that the Law is spiritual; but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin.

ILLUSTRATION:     TOPIC: Bible INDEX: 419 DATE: 8/1986.25 TITLE: Cannibals or Christians

<>   The story is told of a college professor who visited the Fiji Islands. Being agnostic, he critically remarked to an elderly chief, "You're a great leader, but it's a pity you've been taken in by those foreign missionaries. They only want to get rich through you. No one believes the Bible anymore. People are tired of the threadbare story of Christ dying on a cross for the sins of mankind. They know better now. I'm sorry you've been so foolish as to accept their story." The old chief's eyes flashed as he answered, "See that great rock over there? On it we smashed the heads of our victims. Notice the furnace next to it? In that oven we formerly roasted the bodies of our enemies. If it hadn't been for those good missionaries and the love of Jesus that changed us from cannibals into Christians, you'd never leave this place alive! You'd better thank the Lord for the Gospel; otherwise we'd already be feasting on you. If it weren't for the Bible, you'd now be our supper!
