Learning From Lepers about Salvation
Luke 17:11-14 & 19
NKJV 11 Now it happened as He went to Jerusalem that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.
12 Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him ten men who were lepers, who stood afar off. 13 And they lifted up their voices and said, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!" 14 So when He saw them, He said to them, "Go, show yourselves to the priests." And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed. . . .
19 And He said to him, "Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well." NKJV

19 And Jesus said to the man, "Stand up and go. Your faith has made you well." NLT
Introduction You Haven’t Missed a Thing This is Labor Day Week End
When Seeking the Democratic presidential nomination in 1960, John F. Kennedy visited a coal mine in West Virginia, where a miner asked him, “Is it true that you’re the son of one of our wealthiest men?” Kennedy said it was so.
The miner continued, “Is it true you’ve never done a day’s work with your hands all your life?” Kennedy nodded.
“Well, let me tell you this,” the miner replied, “you haven’t missed a thing.”

Illustration Special Assignment
This angel named Carruthers was called in to the heavenly front office and informed by St. Peter that he had been picked for a special assignment—to go down to earth and make a list of all the people who had misbehaved.
Two months went by. Then one afternoon the angel came flapping wearily through the Pearly Gates and collapsed on a golden stool by St. Peter’s desk. “Sir,” he said, “you don’t know the magnitude of this job. I’m going to need some help.”
“Impossible,” St. Peter replied tersely. “We’re shorthanded up here as it is. You’ll have to go it alone.”
The angel struggled to the door. Then, suddenly, he was struck with an idea. “Saint Peter, suppose I made a list of all the people who didn’t misbehave. It would be much shorter and I could finish it in a week.”
“Good thinking,” said St. Peter.
The angel returned to earth and, as promised, he was back in a week with his list. St. Peter studied it and passed it on up the chain of command. Shortly, an order came down to write a letter to everyone on the list, commending them for their good behavior. At this point, the fellow telling the story turned to his friend. “You know what else the letter said?” he asked.
“What?” replied the friend. “AHA! So you didn’t get one either.”

Bob 14 years ago got saved out of alcoholism. When I first saw him He looked like the wild man from Borneo. He is a burly strong man, an ex Green Beret. He was dating a lady in our church. He had been married four times.
Earlier he had worked in the Potosi Prison, and owned a bar in Salem. He used to get in a fight several times a week. He would take bets that he could eat and drink a beer bottle down without stopping.
This is a recent testimony he sent me. I finished my AAS Degree in Plant Science, Landscape Design, and Greenhouse Management in 2002 and last semester I finally finished my BS degree in Agriscience but still had 3 units left in my Nutrition Minor so I held off graduating till this coming December. It has been a long 71/2 years but God and Twila (his sixth wife) got me through it. I got to tell you buddy, in the last 14 years God has performed no less than a Miracle on this old boy. I am living proof that God is Here and is here to stay. Amen
Everyone has a sin problem
Bob realized he had a problem, and eventually dealt with it.
Every one has a sin problem, and just like the lepers knew they had a problem we should recognize our sin problem.
It doesn’t make sense to say I just have a little leprosy, or I am not as bad as some of the lepers. Fact is sin is sin.

When Jesus departed from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out and saying,"Son of David, have mercy on us!"

3. A Father Pleading for his son: Matt 17:15
"Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and suffers severely; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water.
4. The man in hell called for Mercy: Luke 16:24
"Then he cried and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.' NKJV
Everyone Needs Mercy
Illustration He’d Rather Holler
There’s an Ozark story about a hound sitting in a country store and howling as hounds do. In comes a stranger who says to the storekeeper, What’s the matter with the dog?” He’s sitting on a cocklebur.” “Why doesn’t he get off?” “He’d rather holler.” Bits and Pieces, May, 1990, p. 20 Some would rather stay where they are than change.
Illustration Source unknown Mercy, Examples Of Divine: Saved At Age 103
During the revival in Ireland in 1853, an aged convert at Achile, a poor man, one hundred and four years old, walked ten miles to make a public profession of his faith, at a confirmation held by the Protestant Bishop of Tuam.
Mr. E. had a most interesting conversation with this aged man. He said: "I lived one hundred and three years and six months in total darkness, knowing nothing of the way to heaven, blind, and ignorant." "And now," said Mr. E., "what is your hope?" "My hope, sir, is in the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sins of the world. Oh, to think that I have gone on one hundred and three years and six months, caring not for my soul, and then that this blessed truth should have burst upon me! How can I praise Him enough for His wondrous love towards such a poor, old sinner!"
A beautiful picture of the truth of mercy is seen in this text.
Luke 18:13-14 13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." NKJV

3. We Learn All Need To Express . . Positive Faith.
17:14 So when He saw them, He said to them, "Go, show yourselves to the priests." And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed.
Luke 5:14 And He charged him to tell no one, "But go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as a testimony to them, just as Moses commanded."

“. . . And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed.
My wife Christa is in Florida celebrating my youngest daughters birthday. She just turned 40. When she was a child I read a story of a man who would make his children jump to him from high places. Then he would back away, and let them fall. He then told them do not trust anyone.
I decided right then to ask my girls to jump to me. To trust me. Tami made a big game of it, and would say “I am going to trust you daddy,” and then jump without warning. I read this story recently and it reminded me of our little game.
Faith, Trust, Belief,
One night a house caught fire and a young boy was forced to flee to the roof. The father stood on the ground below with outstretched arms, calling to his son, "Jump! I'll catch you." He knew the boy had to jump to save his life. All the boy could see, however, was flame, smoke, and blackness. As can be imagined, he was afraid to leave the roof. His father kept yelling: "Jump! I will catch you." But the boy protested, "Daddy, I can't see you." The father replied, "But I can see you and that's all that matters."
