Stand Up for the Gospel
Galatians1:1-12
LifeWay's Explore the Book Lesson 06-01-03
NASU
1 Paul, an apostle (not sent from men nor through the agency of man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised Him from the dead),
2 and all the brethren who are with me, To the churches of Galatia:
3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,
4 who gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,
5 to whom be the glory forevermore. Amen.
6 I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel;
7 which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.
8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed!
9 As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!
10 For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a bond-servant of Christ.
11 For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man.
12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ.   NASU

NIV
1 Paul, an apostle-sent not from men nor by man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead-
2 and all the brothers with me,
3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,
4 who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,
5 to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel-
7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ.
8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned!
9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!
10 Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.
11 I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel I preached is not something that man made up.
12 I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ. NIV

Introduction
As an American it is abnormal not to stand up for family and country.  In my opinion, abnormalities occur when a  Christian fails to stand up for the gospel.  We must boldly take our stand for the Lord, and His Gospel.  The text indicates some ways we can do this.

1.    The . . Credentials In Standing Up for the Gospel. vs. 1-2
Some will look at this passage and say; well of course Paul stood up for the gospel he's a minister.
Do you remember Paul stood up for the gospel just a few days after he received salvation?
How could Paul make this kind of a stand?   He believed God called him to share.  Do you realize
that call of God comes to all Christians.  We, like Paul, have the credentials of our call.

A.    The Credentials of . . Paul. v 1
Paul, an apostle (not sent from men nor through the agency of man, but through Jesus Christ and
God the Father, who raised Him from the dead),

        1. God Called Paul and gave him credentials.

B.    The Credentials of the . . People. v 2
". . . and all the brethren who are with me, To the churches of Galatia:"

1    God Called the People and gave them credentials.
                a. God called them to Himself just like Paul.
                b. Paul Associated with them because they were Christian People.

2.    The . . Cause In Standing Up for the Gospel. vs. 3-5
God's plan called us out of darkness into Light.  This change causes us to know God's grace and
peace.  He gave Himself to purchase and rescue us from this evil age.  We can shout glory!  Recently
during the invitation time a man came forward for salvation.  One of our men cried out,  "hot-dog."
Jim McNiel (our evangelist) said that must be Hebrew for "hallelujah."  The plan, purchase, and
praise, of our Lord cause us to stand up for the Gospel.

A. The Cause of God's . . Plan. v 3
3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,

        1. Grace Is the Cause of God's Plan.

B.    The Cause of God's . . Purchase. v 4
4 who gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age, according
to the will of our God and Father,

        1. Rescue Is the Cause of the Purchase.

C.    The Cause of God's . . Praise. v 5
5 to whom be the glory forevermore. Amen.

        1. God's Glory Is the Cause of Praise.

3.    The . . Contrast In Standing Up for the Gospel. vs. 6-9
We need to be clear about false teaching a definite contrast exist.  In Paul's day he called these
gospels perverted, different, disturbing, and distorted.  We call this heresy a gospel of the Judaizers.
Paul did not cut any slack for this so called gospel, or those who preached it.  He said they are,
" . . . to be accursed!"  Notice Paul said this on two occasions.  Some will say "Paul, that is not
tolerant."   I hear Paul saying "tolerance of a false gospel takes people to Hell, so I am not tolerant.
    Stand Up for the Gospel."

A.    Contrast In the . . Perversions of the Gospel. vs. 6-7
6 I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ,
for a different gospel; 7 which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you
and want to distort the gospel of Christ.

        1.    Perversion of A Different Gospel. v 6
                a. Really not a Gospel.

        2.    Perversion of A Distorted Gospel. v 7

B.    Contrast In the . . Preaching of the Gospel. vs. 8-9
8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what
we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! 9 As we have said before, so I say again now,
if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!

        1.    Clarity for . . Angelic Preaching. v 8
        2.    Clarity for . . Accursed Preaching. v 8

4.    The . . Clarity In Standing Up for the Gospel. vs. 10-12
Did you know some of the people in Galatia accused Paul of serving man rather than God?
It always amazes me when people want to constantly tell ministers how to minister.  (I am talking
about those who seem to make this their life's work).  Every minister deals with these kinds of people,
as did Paul.  How did he handle them?   He called attention to his motive for service.   He served
because he desired to please the Lord.  If we desire to please the Lord we will stand for the gospel.

A.    Clarity Of . . Motive. v 6
10 For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I
were still trying to please men, I would not be a bond-servant of Christ.

B.    Clarity Of . . Mindfulness. v
11 For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according
    to man.

C.    Clarity Of . . Mastery. v 6
12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of
    Jesus Christ. NASU

        1.    Mastery In Reception.
            a.    Not from man.

        2.    Mastery In Revelation.
            a. From Jesus Christ.

Paul claimed he received the gospel by direct revelation from God.  Most of us heard the gospel from others, and not from a special revelation like Paul.  However, it is the same gospel.  In two words it is, "Jesus Saves."  In a verse; it is John 3:16.  Let's stand up for the gospel!  Amen?  Amen!
