Four Reasons To Practice Christian Morality 1 Cor. 6:1-9a, 11, 13b-20 June 20, 2010
In Our World Today we certainly need to see demonstrations of Christian Morality. I am sad to report that
too often some people in the church want to defend the immoral acts that take place in the community because too often they are known to be among member of the church. We need to share every way we can the morality of the Bible and display at least Four Reasons To Practice Christian Morality!
1. Reason One: To . . Demonstrate Christian Victory. 6:1-7a
A. Demonstrate Our Victory In . . Today’s World. 6:1
1 Does any of you who has a complaint against someone dare go to law before the unrighteous, and
not before the saints?
B. Demonstrate Our Victory In . . Tomorrow’s World. 6:2-3
2 Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest cases? 3 Do you not know that we will judge angels—not to speak of things pertaining to this life?
C. Demonstrate Our Victory In . . Thoughtful Decision Making. 6:4-7a
4 So if you have cases pertaining to this life, do you select those who have no standing in the church to
judge? 5 I say this to your shame! Can it be that there is not one wise person among you who will be able
to arbitrate between his brothers? 6 Instead, brother goes to law against brother, and that before
7 Therefore, it is already a total defeat for you that you have lawsuits against one another. . . .”
Paul expected the church to look inward for the examples and expertise to handle problems of judgement.
He really expresses surprise that the Church in Corinth even thought about asking the world system to settle
the churches problems. He ask a good question in relating the future judgement. If Christians will be asked by the Lord to judge the world and angels do you believe they might judge between two Christians on this earth?
Thoughtful and wise decisions by the church will impress all who notice it and please the Lord.
2. Reason Two: To . . Display Christian Victory. 6:7b-9a, 11
A. Display Our Victory Through . . Submission To Injustice. 6:7b-9
“. . . Why not rather put up with injustice? Why not rather be cheated? 8 Instead, you act unjustly and
cheat—and this to brothers! 9 Do you not know that the unjust will not inherit God's kingdom?
B. Display Our Victory Through The . . Sanctification Of Christ. 6:11
11 Some of you were like this; but you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Paul ask would it not be better to suffer injustice rather than to act unjustly? This question has been asked by some related to the legal battles our convention has carried on between the back away groups. The answer comes back; when we become incorporated we place ourselves under the corporate law of Missouri. This is two corporations not two individuals. Plus binding Christian arbitration was offered up front but refused but the other party. The text shares some had been redeemed out of sinful practices, as Paul says, “some of you were like this.” Praise the Lord he could boast in the Lord for the change Jesus made in their lives.
3. Reason Three: To . . Deliberately Stand Against Sinful Practices. 6:13b-17
A. Deliberately Stand Against The . . Encroachment Of Sexual Sins. 6:13b-15
13 b The body is not for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.
14 God raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by His power.
15 Do you not know that your bodies are the members of Christ? So should I take the members of Christ
and make them members of a prostitute? Absolutely not!
B. Deliberately Stand For The . . Enrichment Of Christ. 6:16-17
16 Do you not know that anyone joined to a prostitute is one body with her? For it says, The two will
become one flesh. 17 But anyone joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.
The world needs to see the deliberate contrast of the Christian life and the lifestyle of the world. Sexual sins try to make their encroachments in every area of life, even the church. Sexual activity is a part of life but not in the degrading way the world wants to present it. We should not be joined to worldly sexual practices. The enrichment that comes to our life from Christ will be a great example to the world as we show we are united to Christ.
4. Reason Four: To . . Declare Our Morality Comes From Christ. 6:18-20
A. Declare That Christ . . Possesses Us. 6:18-19a
18 Flee from sexual immorality! "Every sin a person can commit is outside the body," but the person who
is sexually immoral sins against his own body. 19 Do you not know that your body is a sanctuary of the
Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God?
B. Declare That Christ . . Purchased Us. 6:19b-20
You are not your own, 20 for you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body. HCSB
If we declare to our world the Lord possess us through the purchase He made with His blood sacrifice
they will be able to better understand why we live like we do. The power to live the Christian life comes through the Holy Spirit. We do not have to fight off the attacks of the devil and his forces by ourselves.. All of us can be pleased to share with others Four Reasons To Practice Christian Morality! Amen? Amen!
