Real Love†††† 1 John 4:7-21 HCSB†††† July 05, 2015
The world cannot know love as Christians can because they know the source of God is love.† Sometimes
those who claim to be Christians do not demonstrate love and God is among the first to call attention to it.† In fact God may call such a person a liar.† Godís love can be seen in the acts of His Son, the ministry of His Spirit, and dwelling in Himself.† The Bible flat out says, God is love!
1.†† Real Love Seen in . . Godís Son.† 4:7-11
A.† Real Love Seen In Godís Son . . Through Birth.† 4:7-8
7 Dear friends, let us love one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves has been born
of God and knows God.
8 The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
B.†† Real Love Seen In Godís Son . . Through Belief.† 4:9-11
9 God's love was revealed among us in this way: God sent His One and Only Son into the world so that we
might live through Him.
10 Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation
for our sins.
11 Dear friends, if God loved us in this way, we also must love one another.
The love of God is seen in the birth of His Son, and the possibility of our new birth because of His
birth and our commitment to Him for our salvation.† What a privilege and an expression of love that we can
experience as we receive the new birth He offers.† Our belief also opens the truth of His word so we can glean a better understanding of what He is saying to us.† His word is a blessing and expression of His love He shares and is available to all of us.
2.†† Real Love Perfected By . . Godís Spirit.† 4:12-15
A.† Real Love Seen In Godís Spirit . . Residing in Us.† 4:12-13
12 No one has ever seen God. If we love one another, God remains in us and His love is perfected in us.
13 This is how we know that we remain in Him and He in us: He has given to us from His Spirit.
B.†† Real Love Seen In Godís Spirit . . Remaining in Us.† 4:14-15
14 And we have seen and we testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world.
15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of GodóGod remains in him and he in God.
When we are born again the Holy Spirit comes to live in us.† Godís love is demonstrated as His Spirit is now with us in all our spiritual endeavors.† Some teach the Spirit comes at a later time, sometime after our conversion but that is not true.† Others believe He comes when we have some kind of ďtongue speechĒ but that is not true either because He comes with conversion.† He come to reside in the Christian at the time of conversion and remains during our Christian life.† He love us.
3.†† Real Love Defined By The . .Father.† 4:16-18
A.† Real Love Defined by God The Father with . . Pervading Love.†† 4:16
16 And we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and the one who
remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.
B.†† Real Love Defined by God The Father with . . Perfection of Love.†† 4:17-18
17 In this, love is perfected with us so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; for we are as
He is in this world.
18 There is no fear in love; instead, perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment. So the
one who fears has not reached perfection in love.
The Father has a pervading love for us and He is love.† We will know of His love for eternity.† Sometimes the timing of Godís actions cause a question for us but I always remember what Isaiah 55:9 tells us; "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.
Godís love we are told is perfected with us and we need not fear judgement.† Perfect love cast out fear.† Amen
4.†† Real Love Imitated By His . . People.† 4:19-21†††††††††††
A.† Real Love Imitated by His People for . . God is Love.†† 4:19
19 We love because He first loved us.
B.†† Real Love Imitated by His People for . . Godís People.†† 4:19
20 If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For the person who does not love his
brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.
21 And we have this command from Him: the one who loves God must also love his brother.† (HCSB.)
Because God is Love His people have a desire to love.† When we Christians do not love we cause an incorrect picture of a Christian character.† If in fact some would say as our text says we are not Christians but liars.† We may not appreciate the actions of another Christian but we all must have love for our brothers in Christ.† In all the churches I have been part of I have never had an example of an unloving brother or sister.†
I am pleased that is true.† It is a joy to see Real Love.† Amen?† Amen!
