Tell The Truth        Hebrews 8:1-2, 6-10; 9:22-28       October 22, 2006


Introduction

A great architect under oath was asked his occupation, and he said, “I am the greatest living architect.”

His friend said to him, “why did you answer that way?” He replied, “I was under oath.” We need to think of ourselves as being under oath as we Tell The Truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, about Jesus. Of course the truth needs to be part of our total lifestyle. Do you remember teaching your children about truthfulness? Christian parents certainly need to teach truthfulness in word and deed. A Christian lifestyle ought to be seen as synonymous with the truth.

 

 

1.   Tell The Truth About The Superior . . Commitment of Jesus. 8:1-2, 6a

A.   The Superior Commitment Is A . . Finished Work. 8:1-2

1 Now the main point of what is being said is this: we have this kind of high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, 2 a minister of the sanctuary and the true tabernacle, which the Lord set up, and not man.

       1.    A Finished Work Note His . . Position.

“ . . at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens,. . .”


B.   The Superior Commitment Is A . . Functioning Work. 8:6a

6 But Jesus has now obtained a superior ministry, and to that degree He is the mediator of a better

covenant,

       1.    Functioning As . . Mediator.

       a.    A Superior Ministry.


        All Christians receive a superior privilege of telling others about Jesus. We may tell others the commitment of Jesus is superior, and it is clarified in the finishing and functioning of His work. Note the position of Jesus when He finished His work as He is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty. His work of the cross finished; He now functions as our Mediator. No other system of faith or religion enjoys that kind of commitment.



2.   Tell The Truth About The Superior . . Covenant of Jesus. 8:6b-10

A.   The . . Creation of the Superior Covenant. 8:6b-7

“. . . He is the mediator of a better covenant, which has been legally enacted on better promises. 7 For if that first [covenant] had been faultless, no opportunity would have been sought for a second one.

1.    The . . Promises Sighted of This Covenant.

“. . . was established on better promises.”

2.    The . . Place Sought for This Covenant.

“. . . no place would have been sought for a second.”


B.   The . . Cause of the Superior Covenant. 8:8-9

8 But finding fault with His people, He says: “Look, the days are coming,” says the Lord, “when I will

make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah- 9 not like the covenant

that I made with their fathers on the day I took them by their hand to lead them out of the land of

Egypt. Because they did not continue in My covenant, I disregarded them,” says the Lord.

C.   The . . Communication of the Superior Covenant. 8:10

10 “But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” says the Lord:

“I will put My laws into their minds, and I will write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and

they will be My people. . . .”

1.    Tell the . . Placing of the Covenant Laws. v 10b

“I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts;. . .”

2.    Tell the . . Promise To The People. v 10b

“. . . and they shall be My people.”


       We know the Old Testament contains the old covenant, and promises the new covenant. Obviously this covenant is superior, because we speak of the creation of a superior covenant, and it rests “on better promises.” The cause for the new covenant resides in the fault of the people, as they failed to obey God. God puts the new covenant in the minds of His Children, and writes them in their hearts. Then God promises to be our God and for us to be His people. Because we have His new covenant in our hearts we possess the ability to Tell The Truth, and share what we know about Jesus.



3.   Tell The Truth About The Superior . . Cleansing of Jesus. 9:22-28

A.  The Superior . . Plasma for the Cleansing. 9:22

22 According to the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood

there is no forgiveness.

B.  The Superior . . Place for the Cleansing. 9:23-24

23 Therefore it was necessary for the copies of the things in the heavens to be purified with these [sacrifices] , but the heavenly things themselves [to be purified] with better sacrifices than these.

24 For the Messiah did not enter a sanctuary made with hands (only a model of the true one) but into heaven itself, that He might now appear in the presence of God for us.

C.  The Superior . . Procedure for the Cleansing. 9:25-26

25 He did not do this to offer Himself many times, as the high priest enters the sanctuary yearly with

the blood of another. 26 Otherwise, He would have had to suffer many times since the foundation of

the world. But now He has appeared one time, at the end of the ages, for the removal of sin by the

sacrifice of Himself.

D.  The Superior . . Participation for the Cleansing. 9:27-28

27 And just as it is appointed for people to die once -and after this, judgment- 28 so also the

Messiah, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to bear

sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him. (HCSB)

1.    The . . Participation In the First Coming of Christ. 9:27-28a

2.    The . . Participation In the Second Coming of Christ. 9:28b


       In Christ we enjoy a superior cleansing from sin because He cleanses our sin with His once for all time sacrifice. God always required the shedding of blood for the forgiveness of sin, and Christ shed His for us. His sacrifice is superior through the plasma, place, procedure, and participation in our cleansing. His plasma is superior as He sheds His sinless blood for us. Christ took His blood into the heavenly sanctuary, and that is a superior place; no Levitical priest could enter. We see the procedure as superior as Christ die once for all time.

No more sacrifice needs to be made. The superiority of Christ’s participation in our cleansing rests in His coming to this earth 2,000 years ago to bear sin, and His second coming not to bear sin, but to finalize the reception of salvation to those who acknowledge His Lordship. What a message we have with which to Tell The Truth! Amen? Amen!
