Choose Wisely Psa. 1:1-6 Nov. 08, 2009
Do you pray for wisdom and seek to make wise decisions? I am pleased to say I have followed the advice of the Biblical instruction God gives in James 1:5, and regularly asked for wisdom. Sometimes God teaches wisdom through experiences He allows us to go through. Sometimes we learn by being around those who through many years of service were directed by God to make wise decisions. Certainly one with wisdom needs to pass it on and we need to learn. Many times when we pray for wisdom God reveals what we seek. Certainly all of us need to ask God to direct us to Choose Wisely.
1. The . . Do Nots Of The Person Who Chooses Wisely? 1:1
A. They Do Not . . Stroll In Or Follow The Counsel Of The Wicked. 1:1a
1 How happy is the man who does not follow the advice of the wicked, . . .”
B. They Do Not . . Stand In Or Take The Path Of Sinners. 1:1b
“. . . or take the path of sinners, . . .”
C. They Do Not . . Sit In The Seat Of Scoffers Or Join In With Them. 1:1c
“. . . or join a group of mockers!”
Did you catch the downward progression the righteous person does not take? They do not, stroll, stand, or sit in the seat of the scornful. If people find themselves in a downward progression, just the opposite of those making wise choices, they need to do an about face. It is always good to have some, “do nots,” in our lives. The Bible calls these people happy. How many happy people do you see as you circulate around your community. I dare say most of them, if not all, who have a deep down happiness will be righteous people. God gives a peace that passes understanding to those who seek to grow in His righteousness.
2. The . . Dos Of The Person Who Chooses Wisely? 1:2-3
A. They Do . . Delight In God’s Word. 1:2a
2 Instead, his delight is in the Lord's instruction,. . .”
B. They Do . . Deliberate In God’s Word. 1:2b
“. . . and he meditates on it day and night.”
C. They Do . . Develop Into Fruit Bearing Children Of God. 1:3
3 He is like a tree planted beside streams of water that bears its fruit in season and whose
leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.
In the positive expressions note how a righteous person’s life is saturated with the Word of God. That person delights, deliberates in scripture, and from it develops into a fruitful child of God. I personally wonder about people who claim to be Christians and do not have a hunger for the Word. What excites you more, when all is considered, a sporting event, or a good worship experience when someone gets saved, and others make meaningful decisions? Fruitful Christians help others come to know Christ and develop into fruit bearing believers.
3. The . . Difference In The People Not Choosing Wisely? 1:4-6
A. A Difference In Their . . Contrast. 1:4
4 The wicked are not like this; instead, they are like chaff that the wind blows away.
B. A Difference In Their . . Community. 1:5
5 Therefore the wicked will not survive the judgment, and sinners will not be in the
community of the righteous.
C. A Difference In Their . . Conclusion. 1:6
6 For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked
leads to ruin. (HCSB)
In comparing the righteous with the unrighteous produces quite an obvious difference. What the lifestyle produces shows many contrasts, a different community, and a different conclusion to one’s life. Recently I saw a sign that read “Life has many choices; but eternity only has two.” I talked with a man recently who said, “I am going to hell, but I’m not ready to change.” What a horrible grip Satan gets on the ungodly. Where are you more comfortable; in a community of Christians desiring a gathering to praise the Lord, or sinners, looking for sinful activities? Many with a sinful lifestyle will tell you they know they need to change. I have never heard of a person who from all the choices they could make Choose Wisely because of wisdom the Lord gave who then would not recommend those choices to others. Amen? Amen!
