Do You Show Respect To Others?      Rom. 14:1-12
(HCSB)        Nov. 13, 2011

Did your mom and dad try to teach you respect? It seems like they had difficulty with me and then mom would lecture me about it. Today when I am respectful. and courteous , I say to my self, “well mom it finally worked.”

1.   Do You Show Respect and Follow . . God’s Example. 14:1-4

       A.   God’s Example of . . Acceptance. 14:1-3

1 Accept anyone who is weak in faith, but don’t argue about doubtful issues.

2 One person believes he may eat anything, but one who is weak eats only vegetables.

3 One who eats must not look down on one who does not eat, and one who does not eat must not criticize

one who does, because God has accepted him.

       B.   God’s Example of . . Ability. 14:4

4 Who are you to criticize another’s household slave? Before his own Lord he stands or falls. And he will

stand. For the Lord is able to make him stand.

Do you ever thank God for accepting you? Our life and salvation is certainly a matter of His grace. If the Lord had not accepted us where would we be? I quit high school and never would have completed any higher education but when God saved me He then called me to preach. I thought He had made a mistake because I did not want to pursue advanced schooling. When I see someone who for what ever reason has not sought further education I think of what the grace of God did for me. We may question God when He calls us or someone else but then see how He saw the finished product and when we see the ability He gave that individual we are amazed how the Lord made him stand.

2.   Do You Show Respect and Follow the . . Lord’s Example? 14:5-9

       A.   The Example of . . Honoring the Lord. 14:5-7

5 One person considers one day to be above another day. Someone else considers every day to be the same.

Each one must be fully convinced in his own mind.

6 Whoever observes the day, observes it for the honor of the Lord. Whoever eats, eats for the Lord, since he

gives thanks to God; and whoever does not eat, it is for the Lord that he does not eat it, yet he thanks

7 For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself.

       B.   The Example of the . . Habitual Action of the Lord. 14:8-9

8 If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we

       belong to the Lord.

9 Christ died and came to life for this: that He might rule over both the dead and the living.

My wife asked me if I noticed how people do not clap and shout immediately after someone sings, “God Bless America, at the ball games.” I said, “No why do you think that is true.” She said, “because people are showing more respect.” Well I hope that is true for it would be honoring to the Lord. The Lord habitually displayed an action of respect in His praise and prayers to the Father. It is a joy to behold when one adult demonstrates honor toward another adult. In the church it is a joy to behold an elderly saint being treated with honor and respect. Sometimes even the young children show the proper respect. It really is nice to see that kind of training being displayed.

3.   Do You Show Respect and Follow the . . Family’s Example? 14:10a

       A.   The Example Recognizing Family without . . Criticism. 14:10a1

10 But you, why do you criticize your brother?

       B.   The Example Recognizing Family without . . Casting Down. 14:10a2

“Or you, why do you look down on your brother?

For one Christian brother or sister to criticize another Christian does not show proper respect; in fact it shows disrespect. As the world looks on our churches and they see disrespect we do not attract others as we should. Some harsh words and treatments actually cast down a brother or sister rather than lifting them up and helping them to improve their Christian lifestyle.

4.   Do You Show Respect and Follow Example Of . . Christian Teaching? 14:10b-12

       A.   The Example of Christian Teachings Related to The . . Justification before God. 14:10b-11

“. . . For we will all stand before the tribunal of God. 11 For it is written: As I live, says the Lord, every knee will bow to Me, and every tongue will give praise to God.

       B.   The Example of Christian Teachings Related to The . . Judgement on every Man.. 14:12

12 So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.

If we follow Christian teaching we will know that God is the Judge and everyone of us will stand before the Judgement Seat of the Lord Jesus. Why will we do that? Not for a decision about Salvation but about rewards for the Christian. The conduct of Christians and their respect for the church and their fellow believers as well as other kinds of faithfulness will be judged. Each of us who know the Lord will someday stand before Him to give an account to the Lord. I believe our text tells us we should show respect to one another and believe we will be asked Do You Show Respect To Others? Amen? Amen!
