Love One Another Heb. 13:1-8, 12-19 November 26, 2006
I do not know of anyone who denies that Christians should love one another. At times putting this love into our
lifestyle makes a difficult situation. Even if at times it is difficult to love some fellow Christian we must, Love One Another.
1. Display Love For One Another Through . . Ministries. 13:1-4
A. Display Love Through Ministries of . . Hospitality. 13:1-2
1. The . . Showing of Hospitality. v 1-2a
1 Let brotherly love continue. 2 Don’t neglect to show hospitality, . . .”
2. The . . Surprises of Hospitality. v 2b
“. . . for by doing this some have welcomed angels as guests without knowing it.
B. Display Love Through Ministries To . . Prisoners. 13:3a
3 Remember the prisoners, as though you were in prison with them,
C. Display Love Through Ministries to the . . Mistreated. 13:3b
“. . . and the mistreated, as though you yourselves were suffering bodily.
D. Display Love Through Ministries In . . Marriage. 13:4
4 Marriage must be respected by all, and the marriage bed kept undefiled, because God will judge
immoral people and adulterers.
Christian may express their love for one another and others through the ministries they do. We may open our house for ministry and fellowship. In contrast going to do prison ministry or sharing literature etc. may be an expression of love. Do you know someone that is being mistreated: go to that person and simply listen then give a Christ-like hug. We may also teach love through our marriage, and how we as husband and wife illustrate the purity of our love, and the commitment Christ builds in us.
2. Display Love For One Another Through . . Money. 13:5-6
A. Display Love Through The Proper . . Appreciation of Money. v 5a
5 Your life should be free from the love of money. . . .”
B. Display Love Through The Proper . . Acceptance of Money. v 5b
“. . . Be satisfied with what you have,. . .”
C. Display Love Through The Proper . . Appraisal of Money. v 5c-6
“. . . for He Himself has said, I will never leave you or forsake you. 6 Therefore, we may boldly say: The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?
Love will be shared from our attitude about money. We need the proper appreciation, acceptance, and appraisal of money. We must not love money, but be satisfaction with what we have. Money needs to be related to our relationship to the Lord. The man God called a fool received these words; “This very night your life is demanded of you. And the things you have prepared — whose will they be?” (Luke 12:20) That man did not properly appraise money, nor show his love for others through it.
3. Display Love For One Another Through . . Ministers. 13:7-9, 17-19
A. Display Our Love For Ministers Through Our . . Imitation. 13:7
7 Remember your leaders who have spoken God’s word to you. As you carefully observe the
outcome of their lives, imitate their faith.
B. Display Our Love For Ministers Through Their . . Imitation. 13:8
8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
C. Display Love For Ministers Through . . Internship. 13:17
17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will
give an account, so that they can do this with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable
D. Display Love For Ministers Through . . Intercession. 13:18-19
18 Pray for us; for we are convinced that we have a clear conscience, wanting to conduct
ourselves honorably in everything. 19 And I especially urge you to pray that I may be restored to
you very soon. (HCSB)
Love can be displayed through our treatment of ministers. Our text instructs us in imitation of, internship with, and Intercession for, ministers. Today we hear too many stories about ministers failures, but the majority of ministers do not fit into those stories. In many ways the ministers of my youth gave an example worth imitating. This is especially true as the minister imitates Christ. In fact that is a must for the minister. A person’s imitation may progress to an internship as he/she actually goes with the minister to do visitation, prayer meetings etc.. Then we display love as we intercede to the Lord for our ministers. All of us need to intercede more.
4. Display Love For One Another Through . . Mortification. 13:12-14
A. Display Our Love Through . . Recognition For The Mortification of Christ 13:12
12 Therefore Jesus also suffered outside the gate, so that He might sanctify the people by His
B. Display Our Love Through . . Recreation Of The Mortification of Christ 13:12
13 Let us then go to Him outside the camp, bearing His disgrace. 14 For here we do not
have an enduring city; instead, we seek the one to come.
Did you ever hear someone say, “I was mortified?” Death on the cross mortified Christ. We need to recognize the actual crucifixion placed a curse on Christ, and being, outside the camp, added disgrace. The text indicates we can recreate some of this suffering, and at times some may even be mortified by the treatment of the world.
5. Display Love For One Another Through . . Messianic Messages
A. Display Our Love For Messianic Messages Through Our . . Consistency. 13:15
15 Therefore, through Him let us continually offer up to God a sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit
of our lips that confess His name.
B. Display Our Love For Messianic Messages Through Our . . Communication. 13:15
16 Don’t neglect to do good and to share, for God is pleased with such sacrifices. (HCSB)
We can display love in our Messianic messages with a consistent lifestyle, and verbal communications. Some people want to live the Christian life and be a silent witness. I don’t agree with being a silent witness, but I do believe our live must give the message of Christ. Then we get the opportunity of communicating the message of Christ being the Messiah. This is a great way to display that we Love One Another. Amen? Amen
