Who Is Jesus      Luke 2:8-20, 47-51      Sept. 12, 2004
8 In the same region, shepherds were staying out in the fields and keeping watch at night over their flock.
9 Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, "Don't be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: 11 today a Savior, who is Messiah the Lord, was born for you in the city of David. 12 This will be the sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped snugly in cloth and lying in a manger." 13 Suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying:  14 Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to people He favors! 15 When the angels had left them and returned to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go straight to Bethlehem and see what has happened, which the Lord has made known to us." 16 They hurried off and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby who was lying in the feeding trough. 17 After seeing [them], they reported the message they were told about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary was treasuring up all these things in her heart and meditating on them. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had seen and heard, just as they had been told.
47 And all those who heard Him were astounded at His understanding and His answers. 48 When His parents saw Him, they were astonished, and His mother said to Him, "Son, why have You treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for You." 49 "Why were you searching for Me?" He asked them. "Didn't you know that I had to be in my Father's house?" 50 But they did not understand what He said to them. 51 Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them. His mother kept all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and with people. (HCSB)

Introduction
In the book, More Than A Carpenter, Josh McDowell writes a chapter titled, Liar, Lunatic,
or Lord. It seems to me that presents the options for the question Who Is Jesus? The fact that many still question who Jesus is, makes a testimony of His life. Many want to explain Jesus in a manner that subtracts His divinity, but they still have to deal with the biblical record, and the lives changed by Jesus. In the Gospel of John, a woman said to Jesus, "I know that Messiah is coming" (who is called Christ). Jesus told her; "I am [He], . . . (John 4:25-26)." On several occasions Jesus accepted worship by one believing in Him as the Son of God. When you take Jesus' character, words, actions, and the lives He has changed; In my opinion you have answered the question Who Is Jesus?

1.    Who Is Jesus? He's God's . . Messiah. 2:8-14
The words Messiah, and Christ, refer to the Anointed One of God. Jesus is God's Messiah.
He is also the only Messiah and Savior for mankind; including these shepherds. The shepherds were given the sign so they could recognize the Son of God born in human flesh. Could you predict the birth of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords taking place in a stable? What an unmistakable sign. As the shepherds reflected on this announcement of the angel; additional angels gathered and began the sayings of praise.

A.    The . . Shepherds and God's Messiah. 8-10
8 In the same region, shepherds were staying out in the fields and keeping watch at night over their
flock. 9 Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them,
and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, "Don't be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you
good news of great joy that will be for all the people:

B.    The . . Savior and God's Messiah. 11
11 today a Savior, who is Messiah the Lord, was born for you in the city of David.

C.    The . . Sign and God's Messiah. 12
12 This will be the sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped snugly in cloth and lying in a manger."

D.    .    The . . Sayings and God's Messiah. 13-14
13 Suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying:
14 Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to people He favors!

2.    Who Is Jesus? He's God's . . Message. 2:15-20
The shepherds received the message of the angels about the Savior, Jesus Christ, and made
investigative research to see for themselves. They acted like Missourians, and I am glad they did.
Christianity is a come and see faith. After seeing the facts just as they were told; they went out
reporting the message to all. The shepherds could not report the message without focusing on, and
giving praise to, God for the One who is the message. Mary, Jesus' earthly mother, treasures the
shepherds visit, and mediates upon all they said, rejoicing in the confirmation and praise.

A.    The . . Researching of God's Message. 15-16
15 When the angels had left them and returned to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go straight to Bethlehem and see what has happened, which the Lord has made known to us." 16 They hurried off and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby who was lying in the feeding trough."

B.    The . . Reporting of God's Message. 17-18
17 After seeing [them], they reported the message they were told about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

C.    The . . Rejoicing of God's Message. 19-20
19 But Mary was treasuring up all these things in her heart and meditating on them. 20 The shepherds
returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had seen and heard, just as they had been told.

3.    Who Is Jesus? He's God's . . Model. 2:47-52
We need an example and Jesus said, "I have given you an example,. . ." (John 13:15).
Simon Peter wrote; Jesus gave "an example, so that you should follow in His steps." (1 Peter 2:21).
Jesus and Simon can say that because Jesus is God's model. Even during Jesus' youth He modeled a
teaching ministry that astonished those who heard Him. Joseph and Mary were anxious about Jesus'
disappearance but then found Him giving adherence to the higher call of being about His Father's
business. Jesus' allegiance to His Heavenly Father did not negate His being a model child who grew in
the stewardship of His life, resulting in favor with God and man. Truly all who sincerely seek to know
will discover Who Is Jesus? Amen? Amen!

A.    The . . Astonishment at God's Model. 12:47
47 And all those who heard Him were astounded at His understanding and His answers.

B.    The . . Adherence of God's Model. 12:48
48 When His parents saw Him, they were astonished, and His mother said to Him, "Son, why have
You treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for You."

C.    The . . Allegiance Of God's Model. 12:48
49 "Why were you searching for Me?" He asked them.
