If The Foundations Be Destroyed

Psa. 11:4-7

3 If the foundations are destroyed, What can the righteous do? 4 The Lord is in His holy temple, The Lord's throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men. 5 The Lord tests the righteous, But the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates. 6 Upon the wicked He will rain coals; Fire and brimstone and a burning wind Shall be the portion of their cup. 7 For the Lord is righteous, He loves righteousness; His countenance beholds the upright. NKJV

Introduction

What are the Foundations?

Hebrew From Psa. 11:3  Foundations   shaw-thaw'

H7896; a basis, that is, (figuratively) political or moral support: - foundation, purpose.

Barnes Notes Psalms 11:3 The word "foundations," here, refers to those things on which society rests, or by which social order is sustained-the great principles of truth and righteousness that uphold society, as the foundations on which an edifice rests uphold the building.

The reference is to a destruction of those things in a community, when truth is no longer respected; when justice is no longer practiced; when fraud and violence have taken the place of honesty and honor; when error prevails; when a character for integrity and virtue affords no longer any security.

The Bible Is A Major Part of our Foundation and It Tell of Christ

1 Cor 3:11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. NKJV

Eph 2:20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, NKJV

2 Tim 2:19 Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: "The Lord knows those who are His," and, "Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity."

The Early Fathers

"This is all the inheritance I give to my dear family. The religion of Christ will give them one which will make then rich indeed." Patrick Henry, "Last Will and Testament, 11-20-1798.

"If we abide by the principles taught in the Bible, our country will go on prospering and to prosper; but if we and our posterity neglect its instructions and authority, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us and bury all our glory in profound obscurity." Daniel Webster, 1821

"We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred Writings, that 'except the Lord build the House, they labor in vain that built it.' I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without His concurring aid, we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel." Benjamin Franklin, Constit. Conv. 6-28-1787.

"It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the Providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits and to humbly implore His protection and favor." George Washington, National Day of Prayer and Thanks. 10-2-1789.

This Could Happen To Any of Us

A man said to a bystander Just look at that young person with the short hair and blue jeans. Is it a boy or a girl?

Bystander: It's a girl. She's my daughter.

Man: Oh, please forgive me, sir. I had no idea you were her father.

Bystander: I'm not. I'm her mother

A question is asked in verse three:

3 If the foundations are destroyed, What can the righteous do?

Look To The . . Temple and Throne Of God.

Look To The . . Test Of God.

Look To The . . Temperament of God.

1.   If the Foundations are destroyed Look To The . . Temple and Throne Of God. 11:4a & b

3 If the foundations are destroyed, What can the righteous do? 4 The Lord is

in His holy temple, The Lord's throne is in heaven; . . .” NKJV

       A.  Look To The . . Presence of the Lord. 11:4a

4 The Lord is in His holy temple,. . .”

              1.    The Lord’s Presence May be in the Temple.

              2.    The Lord’s Presence May Be Removed.

                     a.    My daughter Tami’s called this week and in tears told of an experience she had at a funeral. Her good friend’s husband died suddenly, and at the funeral the pastor never mentioned the plan of salvation, and how a person goes to heaven.

                     b.    The Lord in not present in every Temple.

       B.   Look To The . . Position of the Lord. 11:4b

               “. . . The Lord's throne is in heaven; . . .”

              1.    The Throne In Heaven is Constant.

              2.    The Throne In Heaven Represents Holiness. Isa. 6:1-4      1 In the year that King Uzziah

died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. 2 Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one cried to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!" 4 And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke. NKJV

RYRIE 6:3 Holy means separate from all that is sinful and immoral. The threefold repetition means that God is uniquely holy. (from Ryrie Study Bible)

               a.  Note when Isaiah saw the Throne.

                    1)  When his king died.

                    2)  We need to ask if some king in our lives needs to die, so we will see God.

                    3)  When the Foundations are destroyed Look to the Throne.

I do not quote Oral Roberts very much but I heard him say this which is worth quoting. He tells of having a very difficult time with major decisions and turmoil, and in the midst of his prayer time he said something like this, “I heard an audible voice say Oral I am not nervous.”

Application

If we feel the foundations have been destroyed, we need to remember God is still on His Throne.

Rev 4:10-11 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying: 11 "You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created."

Rev 6:16-17 16 and said to the mountains and rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?" NKJV

If the Foundations are destroyed Look To The . . Throne Of God.

2.   If the Foundations are destroyed Look To The . . Test Of God. 11:4c-6

3 If the foundations are destroyed, What can the righteous do? . . .

4c “. . . His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men. 5 The Lord tests the righteous, But the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates. 6 Upon the wicked He will rain coals; Fire and brimstone and a burning wind Shall be the portion of their cup. NKJV

       A.   The Lord Has Test for The . . Sons of Men. 11:4c

4c “. . . His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men.

Psalms 11:4 Barnes Notes [His eyelids try] That is, they prove, penetrate into, as if by seeing through them. The "eyelids" here are synonymous with the eyes. The form of the language is varied in accordance with a custom common in Hebrew, and there is attributed here to the eyelids what properly belongs to the eyes-the power of seeing.

Heb 4:13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. NKJV

       B.   The Lord Has Test for The . . Saintly. 11:5a

5a The Lord tests the righteous, . . .”

       C.   The Lord Has Test for The . . Sinful. 11:5b-6

5b “. . . But the wicked and the one who

loves violence His soul hates. 6 Upon the wicked He will rain coals; Fire and brimstone and a burning wind Shall be the portion of their cup. NKJV

Gordon MacDonald, in his book Ordering Your Private World, told of an experience in his own life that illustrates this truth. “Some years ago, when Gail and I bought the old abandoned New Hampshire farm we now call Peace Ledge, we found the site where we wished to build our country home strewn with rocks and boulders. It was going to take a lot of hard work to clear it all out....The first phase of the clearing process was easy. The big boulders went fast. And when they were gone, we began to see that there were a lot of smaller rocks that had to go too. But when we had cleared the site of the boulders and the rocks, we noticed all of the stones and pebbles we had not seen before. This was much harder, more tedious work. But we stuck to it, and there came the day when the soil was ready for planting grass. Our Daily Bread

Illustration         Leaning Tower of Pisa

The Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy is going to fall. Scientists travel yearly to measure the building’s slow descent. They report that the 179-foot tower moves about one-twentieth of an inch a year, and is now 17 feet out of plumb. They further estimate that by the year 2007 the 810-year old tower will have leaned too far and will collapse onto the nearby ristorante, where scientists now gather to discuss their findings.

Quite significantly, the word “pisa” means “marshy land,” which gives some clue as to why the tower began to lean even before it was completed. Also—its foundation is only 10 feet deep! Source unknown

Illustration        Tokyo’s Imperial Hotel

The great architect Frank Lloyd Wright was given the challenge of building the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, one of the most earthquake-prone cities in the world. Wright’s investigation showed that a solid foundation could be “floated” on a sixty-foot layer of soft mud underlying the hotel, which would provide a shock-absorbing but solid support for the immense building.

Shortly after the hotel was completed it withstood the worst earthquake in fifty-two years, while lesser buildings fell in ruins around it. Today in the Word, March 1989, p. 6.
