Led By The Spirit

Romans 8:1-14

C:\JAMMC2008\ROM8-1TAB.SER.wpd

Introduction

The text of the lesson begins with one of the clearest statements about the blessings of being in Christ for In Christ, Godly condemnation does not exist. Look at the last few verses of chapter eight; we also see separation from God does not exist. What a privilege to be Led By The Spirit!

NKJV 1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. 8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. 10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. 12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors — not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. NKJV

Illustration

A man visiting a pagan nation came upon a slave auction. He watched for a while and saw people being treated like chattel. It grieved his heart. Then he saw a very attractive your girl being brought up to the center stage for auction. He saw and heard the men making vulgar remarks and deciding to bid on the young girl.

He had a daughter about the same age, and so he decided to bid on the girl. He won and set her free, she fell at his feet and said I will serve you all of my life.

Application

Note the words "in flesh like ours" and realize what a blessing it is that Christ knows every limitation of the flesh. Of course even though He came in our likeness (v 3) He sinned not, and that is a significant difference. The walk of our performance is according to the Spirit

2.       The Spirit's Leadership Produces. . Life. v 5-8

5 For those who live according to the f sh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to

the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. 8 So then, those

who are in the flesh cannot please God. NKJV

            A.        The Spirit Led Life Produces . . Motivation. v 5

5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.

                        1.         Two Motivations - - The Flesh or The SPIRIT.

            B.        The Spirit Led Life Produces A . . Mind Set. v 6

6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

                        1.         The. . Mortality of our Mind-set.       v 6

                                    a.         The "FLESH" mind set is death.

                                    b.         The "SPIRIT" mind set is life.

1 Cor 2:14-15 14 But the natural man does not welcome what comes from God’s Spirit, because it is foolishness to him; he is not able to know it since it is evaluated spiritually. 15 The spiritual person, however, can evaluate everything, yet he himself cannot be evaluated by anyone.             C.        The Spirit Led Life Produces A . . Meekness. v 7-8

7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be

One ship drives east and another drives west

With the selfsame winds that blow. 'Tis the set of the sails

And not the gales Which tells us the way to go.

Like the winds of the sea are the ways of fate,

As we voyage along through life—

'Tis the set of a soul That decides its goal

And not the calm or the strife.

Application

The Spirit's leadership produces A Spirit-led motivation, mind-set, and meekness. Our motivation is Spirit led and not according to the flesh. The Spirit changes our mind-set. This affects our view of mortality as we view death differently, and know we will live with God eternally. This produces an attitude of meekness that submits to the Lord.

3.       The Spirit’s Leadership Produces. . License. 8:9-10

NKJV

            A.        The Spirit Produces License of . . Relationships. v 9

9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.

                                    1.         Related to Christ vs no relationship to Christ.

            B.        The Spirit Produces License of . . Righteousness. v 10

10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the

Spirit is life because of righteousness.

                            1.         Reality of Christ’s . . Presence.          v 10 a

And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin,. . .”

                        2.         Reality of Christs’s . . Performance.  v 10

“ . . . but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.”

Illustration

Shortly after joining the Navy, the new recruit asked his officer for a pass so he could attend a wedding. The officer gave him the pass, but informed the young man he would have to be back by 7 p.m. Sunday.

“You don’t understand, sir,” said the recruit. “I’m in the wedding.”

“No, you don’t understand,” the officer shot back. “You’re in the Navy!” Source unknown

Application

Have you ever thought about all the licenses we have? Licenses give a recognized freedom. In Christ we have a license to recognize a freedom of relationship that causes righteousness in our daily life. When we (at conversion) received the Holy Spirit, God gave us the evidence of our salvation. We say we know we are saved because we have the presence of the Holy Spirit residing in us. We do many acts of righteousness because of His work in us. In a sense we are licensed to do righteousness.

4.       The Spirit’s Leadership Produces . . Liability. 8: 11-14

NKJV

            A.        The Liability from the. . Resurrection.      v 11

11 And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the

dead lives in you, then He who raised Christ from the dead will also bring your mortal bodies to life through His Spirit who lives in you.

            B.        The Liability of. . Resurrection.      v 12-13

12 So then, brothers, we are not obligated to the flesh to

live according to the flesh, 13 for if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

            C.        The Liability of. . Relationship.      v 14

14 All those led by God's Spirit are God's sons.

Illustration

Our Liability is an obligation to follow Christ under the guidance of the Spirit. A convert form the mission field was bought to the states and ask to speak on obedience to the missionary call. He asked does not their Bible say to, “go?” He got toe answer of yes but we feel it might help if you spoke to them about it. He responded if they don’t obey Christ they certainly won’t obey me.

Application

God and His Children are liable. God is liable from the resurrection to give us a new life and an ultimate resurrection. He will do this just like His Spirit did it for Christ. But there is also a liability of the resurrection to God's Children as we are liable to live like Christ. This is the liability of relationship; I am to live as one of His Children because I am Led By The Spirit. Amen? Amen!

J Oswald Sanders makes the statement the greatest command in the Bible for the Christian is, “Be Filled with the Spirit.” He then says if we obey that command all the others will be obeyed also.”

Illustration    Holy Spirit:

There's an interesting story about how a gifted violinist named Fritz Kreisler acquired a Stradivarius violin. Kreisler heard about the violin owned by an old Englishman and offered to buy it, but the old man said it wasn't for sale. One day Kreisler ventured to the old man's house and said, "If I can't buy it, may I touch it?" The old Englishman invited him in and even allowed him to begin making music with it. Great tears welled up in the old Englishman's eyes, and he said, "It is not for sale, but it is yours. You are the Master and alone are worthy of it!" That is what worship is all about. God is the Master, and He alone is worthy.
