The New Heaven

Rev 21:1-7

Rev 21:1-7 NKJV

1 Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea.

2 Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

3 And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. 4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away."

5 Then He who sat on the throne said,"Behold, I make all things new." And He said to me, "Write, for these words are true and faithful."

<>6 And He said to me,"It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. 7 He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. NKJV

Introduction              Index: 157-1358 Title: Thinking Back

When Fred arrived at the Pearly Gates there was hardly any line and he didn't have to wait more than a minute before his interview. Naturally, he was a little nervous about getting through the gates and into the heavenly city. Very quickly he found himself standing before an impressive angelic being with a clipboard who started getting his entry data down.

After name, address, and a few other particulars, the angelic being said, "Fred, it would help the process if you could share with me some experience from your life on earth when you did a purely unselfish, kindly deed."

Well, Fred thought about it for a minute and then said, "Oh, yes. I think I have something you might he interested in. One day I was walking along and I came upon a little old lady who was being mercilessly beaten up by a huge motorcycle gang type of fellow. He was smacking her back and forth. Well, I just stepped right up and first I pushed over his motorcycle--just to distract his attention. And then I kicked him real hard in the shins and told the old lady to run for help. And then I hauled off and gave the guy a great shot right to the gut with my fist."

The being looked at Fred with a great deal of interest and said, "Wow, that's quite a story. I'm very impressed. Could you tell me just when this happened?" Fred looked at his watch and said, "Oh, about two or three minutes ago."

1. The . . Beauty of the New Heaven. v 1-2

Introduction:   Note in these verses:

1.         The Preparation of Heaven. Jesus said “I go to prepare a place for you.” (John 14:2)

<>A.        Preparing The Beauty of . . Newness. v 1 a

v 1 a 1 Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away.

3 heavens.

1          Atmospheric Heaven.

2          Stellar Heaven for Stars etc..

2 Pet 3:7 & 10

7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. (KJV)

10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. (KJV)

B.        Preparing The Beauty of . . openness. v 1 b

             v 1 b “. . . also there was no more sea”

Barnes Notes  Rev 21:1

Now, the seas and oceans occupy about three-fourths of the surface of the globe, . . . In the present state of things, these vast oceans are necessary to render the world a fit abode for human beings, . . . these vast wastes of water will be needless. (Barnes' Notes)

            1.         I personally think ‘no more sea needs more information before we make a dogmatic interpretation.

C.        Preparing The Beauty of . . Holiness. v 2

2 Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

An artist said “When I am finishing a picture, I hold some God-made object up to it-a rock, a flower, the branch of a tree or my hand-as a kind of final test. If the painting stands up beside a thing man cannot make, the painting is authentic. If there's a clash between the two, it is bad art.” Marc Chagall (1887-1985)

Application

Heaven will be a beautiful place, with beautiful people, provide by God.

1 Cor 2:9

9          but just as it is written, "Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, and {which} have not entered the heart of man, all that God has prepared for those who love Him." (NAS)

2. The . . Blessings of the New Heaven. v 3 - 5

A.        The Blessing of Peace from God’s . . Presence. v 3

3 And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.

B.        The Blessing of Peace from God’s . . Provision. v 4

4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away."

Did you ever notice there is no mention of the Devil in:

Gen 1 & 2 and Rev 21 & 22

No More CRYING

No more Dying

No Mourning

No Pain

No Sin

Think about this: if God let sin into heaven, Men would say watch your wives, and daughters, and lock your doors.

Yes God is so much a God of love he let some thieves and rapers into His heaven.

If you get angry at tragedy and sorrow direct it in the right direction. Get angry at Satan and Sin.

C.        The Blessing of Peace from God’s . . Publication. v 5

5 Then He who sat on the throne said,"Behold, I make all things new." And He said to me, "Write, for these words are true and faithful."

7 new things

New Heaven, Earth, Bride, Jerusalem, Temple, light, Paradise.

Illustration                Index: 1265-1272 Title: Out of Tune

Ted Malone, whose radio show came on early in the morning, told of the Idaho shepherd who wrote: "Will you, on your broadcast, strike the note 'A'? I'm a sheepherder way out here on a ranch, far away from a piano. The only comfort I have is my old violin. It's all out of tune. Would you strike 'A' so that I might get in tune?"

Malone honored the request. Later he received a "thank you" note from the distant shepherd saying, "Now I'm in tune."

One of the purposes and responsibilities of personal and public worship is to enable the aspirant to keep tuned to the Great Shepherd. One of the joys of the Christian life is to help others recapture the missing note!

Application

Yes there will be a multitude of blessings in heaven. The number one blessing is the presence of God.

3. The . . Behavior of the New Heaven. v 6-7

A.        The . . Authoritative Behavior . v 6

6 And He said to me,"It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts.

Done: It is done, It has come to pass.

Jesus on the cross said “it is finished”

Alpha and Omega.      Rev 1:8

8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. (KJV)

Zech 12:10      And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the

spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. (KJV)

B.        The . . Approving Behavior. v 7

7 He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.

Illustration                Topic: Work Index: 3888-3893

A man risked his life by swimming through the treacherous rip-tide to save a youngster from being swept out to sea. After the child recovered from the harrowing experience, he thanked the man for his act of sacrifice.

The man responded to the boy's thanks: "That's okay. Just make sure your life was worth saving."

Application

We want to live so our lives make a difference.
