RIGHTEOUSNESS FROM THE ROCK.

Romans 9:30-33

30 What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness of faith; 31 but Israel, pursuing the law of righteousness, has not attained to the law of righteousness.

32 Why? Because they did not seek it by faith, but as it were, by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone. 33 As it is written: "Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, And whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame." NKJV

A woman in India had learned that she was a sinner, that God is holy and cannot pass by sin. She often said, "I need some great prince to stand between my soul and God."

After a while she heard that the Bible contained the account of a Savior who had died for sinners. So she asked a Pundit to read the Bible to her. He began at the first chapter of Matthew, and as he read the list of names in the genealogy of Christ, the woman thought; What a wonderful Prince this Jesus must be to have such a long line of ancestors! And then the Pundit read: "Thou shalt call his name Jesus: for He shall save His people from their sins." The woman exclaimed, "Oh, this is the Prince I want! This is the Prince I want! This is the Prince who is also a Savior!"

The scene is a four engine airliner. The pilot's voice comes across the intercom: "Those of you on the left side of the plane have probably noticed that one of our engines has failed. Do not be alarmed. We can still fly on three engines, but we will probably arrive about 15 minutes late." A few minutes later the pilot's calm voice was heard again: "Those of you on the right side of the plane are probably aware that a second engine has failed. Do not be alarmed. We can make it on two engines, though we will probably be at least 30 minutes late now."

A few minutes later the pilot spoke to the passengers: "It has just come to my attention that a third engine has failed. Please do not be alarmed. We can make it to the airport on one engine. However, we will arrive approximately 45 minutes late." One passenger turned to another and said, "Boy, I hope that fourth engine doesn't fail, or we could be up here all night!"

Application:

Seeking. . Righteousness from the rock.

Securing . . . Righteousness from the Rock.

3.       Stumbling . . Over Righteousness from the Rock. v 32b -33

“. . . For they stumbled at that stumbling stone. 33 As it is written: "Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, And whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame." NKJV

Psalms 118:22 The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief corner <stone>.

Isaiah 8:14 "Then He shall become a sanctuary; But to both the houses of Israel, a stone to strike and a rock to stumble over, <And> a snare and a trap for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Isaiah 28:16 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone, A costly cornerstone <for> the foundation, firmly placed. He who believes <in it> will not be disturbed.

Matthew 21:42 Jesus said^ to them, "Did you never read in the Scriptures, 'THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER <stone>;THIS CAME ABOUT FROM THE LORD, AND IT IS MARVELOUS IN OUR EYES'?

1 Peter 2:6 For <this> is contained in Scripture: "BEHOLD I LAY IN ZION A CHOICE STONE, A PRECIOUS CORNER <stone>, AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM SHALL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED."

A.        Stumbled over           Confidence in Christ.

“. . . For they stumbled at that stumbling stone. 33 As it is written: "Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, And whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame." NKJV

            1.         Works Rather than Faith.

B.        Stumbled over           the Cross of Christ

“. . . For they stumbled at that stumbling stone. 33 As it is written: "Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, And whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame." NKJV

            1.         Works Rather than Crucifixion

                        a.         Ashamed

Luke 9:26 "For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him will the Son of Man [be ashamed] when He comes in His glory, and <the glory> of the Father and of the holy angels.

2 Timothy 1:8 Therefore do not [be ashamed] of the testimony of our Lord, or of me His prisoner; but join with <me> in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God,

2 Timothy 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to [be ashamed], handling accurately the word of truth.

1 Co 1:18-25

18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,

And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent."

20 Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. 22 For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. NKJV

Conclusion: Topic: Righteousness Subtopic: Commanded Title: Quality Control

Dr Stowell said, “Some time ago, I was chatting with a man who consults with some of the largest U.S. companies about their quality control. Because ministry is a form of human quality control, I thought I'd ask him for some insights. He said, "In quality control, we are not concerned about the product." I was surprised. But then he went on to say, "We are concerned about the process. If the process is right, the product is guaranteed."

How relevant to our Christianity. We tend to be more oriented to the "product" of our faith than the process. As American Christians, we tend to desire and demand products of righteousness, but give little attention to the process. -- Joseph M. Stowell
