The Man Called Noah

Gen. 6:7-9 and Others

Introduction       ReligionToday News Summary for Thursday, September 14, 2000

A deep-sea discovery has lent credence to the story of Noah's flood. Explorers looking under the Black Sea near the coast of Turkey have found the remains of a 7,500-year-old civilization that existed before it was deluged by a flood that archaeologists say might be Noah's flood.

...Explorers led by Robert Ballard, famous for discovering the wreck of the Titanic in 1985, found a rectangular building that probably is a house, and expect to find dozens more, news reports said. The structure is 310 feet below the surface. ..."It's clear [that] a vast amount of real estate is under water and that a vast amount of people were living around the Black Sea," Ballard told Reuters (see link #6 below) from his research ship, 12 miles off the Turkish shore. "These people obviously had to run for it, and as a result left their history behind and intact," Ballard told USA Today. "This is a time capsule that carried us back to a period before the flood."

...The 39-by-13-foot building was found by sonar and on pictures taken by a roving vehicle attached by fiber-optic cable to the research ship. It is constructed of wood branches and sticks embedded in a clay matrix, according to news reports.

1.   Noah and The . . Grace of God.   6:7-8

       A.   This Is . . First Grace. 6:8

“But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

              1.    The First Time Grace Appears In The Bible.

              2.    Grace Is Favor From God.

              3.    Grace Is Undeserved.

                     a.    God Does Not Have To Give It.

Our Daily Bread, Sept.-Nov. 1997, page for October 31

       B.   This Is . . Found Grace. 6:8

“But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

                 1.     Found In The Eyes of the Lord.

                 2.     Found Is The Action of God not Noah.

A search party was organized to find a little boy who got lost in a winter storm. This boy’s body was uncovered by His father’s foot as the walked along. The little boy was asleep in the snow. He jumped up and exclaimed “Oh, Daddy I found you, I found you!”

That is how Noah found grace. God knew of this righteous man in the midst of all the sinful lifestyles existing at that time.

       C.   This Is . . Favored Grace Expressed In A Word. 6:8

“But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

              1.    God Is Grace.

                     a.    He Did Not Become Grace for Noah.

                     b.    God Chose To name This Quality At This Time.

Now for the first time grace itself finds a tongue to express its name. Grace has its fountain in the divine breast. The stream has

been flowing forth to Adam, Eve, . . .etc.. . By the time it reaches Noah it has found a name, by which it is recognized among people to this day. (Barnes' Notes)

              2.    God’s Grace Is in Contrast to His Wrath. 6:7

7 So the LORD said, "I will destroy man whom I

have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them." NKJV

                     a.    God will punish sin.

                     b.    Yours or mine.

                     c.    He Is A God of Grace, and Wrath.

       D.   This Is . . Focused Grace. 6:8

“But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

              1.    Focused In Work.

              2.    Noah worked harder after this than ever before.

              3.    Grace goes to work for the Lord.

              4.    What are you doing because of Grace?

My nine year old granddaughter Anna decided this week she would leave home. Her Mother, and my daughter Tami, let her leave. She walked out in her bare feet, no extra clothes and no money. Her 12 year old brother was very concerned and asked his mother "aren’t you going to go get her." My daughter Tami told him how she left.

Anna finally walked towards home, and her mother was watching from the garage. Tami passed her house, saw her mom, and wanted to pass on by, but her mother said, “Anna you come on in here.” Then her Mother talked to her about this, and Anna said, "well when I did that before you stopped me."

Tami said, Anna, let me tell you if you ever leave I want you to know the door will be open and the light on until you come back home. Anna said "but Momma you might get robbed, Tami said, "I would rather be robbed than have you come home to a locked door." Then she said Anna, "you will never do anything that will make your Mom stop loving you."

We all need Grace. It really doesn’t matter if you’re the first or last that grace is given too, we all need it.

We need to discover Grace just like Noah did. Have you?

2.   Noah and The . . Walk with God.      6:9

       A.   Walked with God As A . . Just Man. 6:9a

9 This is the genealogy of Noah . Noah was a just man,

       B.   Walked with God As A . . Perfect Man. 6:9b

“. . .perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God.”

              1.    PERFECT = Without Blemish

Illustration         Sharpen Your Axe

A young man approached the foreman of a logging crew and asked for a job. "That depends," replied the foreman. "Let's see you chop down this tree." The young man stepped forward and skillfully chopped down a great tree. Impressed, the foreman exclaimed, "You can start Monday."

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday rolled by — and Thursday afternoon the foreman approached the young man and said, "You can pick up your pay check on the way out today." Startled, the young man replied, "I thought you paid on Friday."

"Normally we do," said the foreman. "But we're letting you go today because you've fallen behind. Our daily felling charts show that you've dropped from first place on Monday to last place today."

"But I'm a hard worker," the young man objected. "I arrive first, leave last and even have worked through my coffee breaks!" The foreman, sensing the young man's integrity, thought for a minute and then asked, "Have you been sharpening your axe?" The young man replied, "No sir, I've been working too hard to take time for that!" Author Unknown

We need to walk with God, through Worship, Prayer, Bible Study, witnessing etc..

3.   Noah and The . . Ark of God.       6:14

14 Make yourself an ark of gopherwood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch.

       A.   Noah Received The . . Direction To Built An Ark.

“Make yourself an ark . . .”

              1.    Are you receiving direction for your life?

              2.    Remember Noah received this in his latter years.

       B.   Noah Received The . . Details To Built An Ark.

“. . . of gopherwood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch.

              1.    He got detail direction.

              2.    God will give us directions; are we listening?.

Illustration         Noah's Ark

Everything I need to know about life, I learned from Noah's Ark...

One:         Don't miss the boat.

Two:        Remember that we are all in the same boat.

Three:      Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark.

Four:        Stay fit. When you're 500 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big.

Five:         Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.

Six:          Build your future on high ground.

Seven:      For safety's sake, travel in pairs.

Eight:       Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.

Nine:        When you're stressed, float a while.

Ten:          Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by

Eleven:     Don’t focus entirely on the storm outside you might have a few woodpeckers on the inside.

Twelve:            No matter the storm, when you are with God, . . . . . . there's a rainbow waiting.

Do we hear from the Lord as He prepares us for the future?

Are there so called arks for us to build?

4.   Noah and The . . Offering to God.     8:20 - 9:1

       A.   Noah’s . . Action In Offering. 8:20

“Then Noah built an altar to the LORD, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.”

              1.    Note this is Noah’s first action after the flood.

              2.    An offering as an act of Worship.

              3.    The Reverence of . . Obedience.

              4.    You find several time in the early books of the Bible that sacrifices are offered, and we have not seen the instructions for this practice.

                     a.    God must have given it.

                     b.    Noah Acted In Obedience.

Heb 11:4 By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks. NKJV

Illustration                 Be Observant

Merv was in a terrible accident at work. He fell through a floor tile and ripped off both of his ears. Since he was permanently disfigured, he settled with the company for a rather large sum of money and went on his way.

One day, Merv decided to invest his money in a small, but growing Internet company. After weeks of negotiations, he bought the company outright. But, after signing on the dotted line he realized that he knew nothing about running such a business and quickly set out to hire someone who could do that for him.

The next day he had set up three interviews. The first guy was great. He knew everything he needed to and was very interesting. At the end of the interview, Merv asked him, "Do you notice anything different about me?" And the gentleman answered, "Why yes, I couldn't help but notice you have no ears."

Merv got very angry and threw him out. The second interview was with a woman, and she was even better than the first guy. He asked her the same question, "Do you notice anything different about me?" She replied, "Well, you have no ears." Merv again was upset and tossed her out.

The third and last interview was the best of all three. It was with a very young man who was fresh out of college. He was smart. He was handsome and he seemed to be a better businessman than the first two put together. Merv was anxious, but went ahead and asked the young man the same question, "Do you notice anything different about me?" And to his surprise, the young man

answered, "Yes. You wear contact lenses." Merv was shocked, and said, "What an incredibly observant young man. How in the world did you know that?" The young man fell off his chair laughing hysterically and replied, "Well, it's pretty hard to wear glasses with no ears!"

       B.   God’s . . Acknowledgment Of The Offering. 9:1

“So God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them:"Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.

              1.    God Blessed.       9:1a

              2.    God Commanded. 9:1b

The lady who started Home Interiors asked a Jeweler to make her a necklace with two shovel. One shovel needed to be larger than the other. Her reasoning: God ask her to give and she did, but He gave back to her with a much larger shovel.

Application        Do we really seek to worship God?

Do you and I give to God anything that looks like a sacrifice?

2 Sam 24:24 Then the king said to Araunah, "No, but I will surely buy it from you for a price; nor will I offer burnt offerings to the LORD my God with that which costs me nothing." So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

5.   Noah and The . . Covenant from God. Gen 9:14-17

       A.   The . . Remembrance of the Covenant. 9:14-15

14 It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; 15 and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.

              1.    God made the Covenant.

              2.    God reminds His people of the Covenant.

       B.   The . . Rainbow of the Covenant. 9:16-17

16 The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth." 17 And God said to Noah , "This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth."

              1.    The Rainbow Is A Sign.

You know I serve on the Missouri Baptist Executive Board. The last two summer meetings have been held on the Campuses of our Colleges in Hannibal, and Bolivar Missouri.

Last year Hannibal arranged for us to have an evening meal and river boat cruse. As we went down the Mississippi river we noted it flowed between two hill sides. It started to rain so everyone went into cabin. When we started back we were able to again go up on the top deck, and a rainbow was arched between the two hills, and made a beautiful sight. This year we went to S.W.B.U. and they took us to see the Springfield Cardinals play baseball. The game was rained out, and as we left we saw a double rainbow in the sky.

We were reminded of God’s Covenant, and praised His holy name
