Sermon Prepared by Dr James A McCullen
Do Good People Go to Hell?
Matt 7:21-23 and Others

21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven. 22 "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' 23 "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.' . (NAS)

Introduction
This week Mark McGwire hit his 62 home run. He broke the record of Babe Ruth and Roger Marris. As he was interviewed he said he knew both of them were looking down from heaven, and that they were with him.

Have you noticed how we let all our heroes into heaven. Most think those who have been what we call good people will be in heaven. But from the Bible I want to emphasize to you good people can go to hell.

1.    Good People can go to Hell because they Disregard the . . Will of God. v 21

2.    Good People can go to Hell because they Disregard the . . Work of God. v 22

3.    Good People can go to Hell because they Disregard the . . Way of God. v 23

1.    Good People can go to Hell because they Disregard the . . Will of God.
v 21 & John 6:39-40
21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven.

A.    The Will of God Is Not A . . Boastful Talk. v 21

    1.    In this town's ministerial fellowship we have a fine group of ministers. I think all of them
love the Lord. In my opinion they are all fine.

    2.    I have know ministers in other ministerial fellowships that I would judge.    I would say
they are trying to get to heaven by their works.

a.. On one occasion I had w wedding with one of them. They were very proud of all their
religious garments. Bu they really didn't give any indication the knew Jesus.

B.    The Will of God Is A . . Believing Walk. John 6:39-40
NOTE:    These are 2 of the 3 verses in the New Testament, that say "this is the will of".
39 "And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day. 40 "For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him, may have eternal life; and I Myself will raise him up on the last day."

        1.    Believing He Is Who He Said He Was.

        2.    Believing He Will Do What He Said He Would

Doctrinal Note: Eternal Security is believing Jesus will do the will of the Father and raise you up on the last day.

Two friends went for a boat ride. The boat upset. The river was swift and deep. The man to whom the boat belonged had taken two life jackets along. He said "I put one on, but my friend laid his down beside him. When we were thrown into the river, my life jacket soon brought me to the top, but my friend never came up again." Christ's death, like the life jacket, will not save you unless, by faith in Him, you put it on.

Application

It is the Will of God that you put on the "Eternal Life" life Jacket  "Jesus".   2 Pet 3:9

2.    Good People can go to Hell because they Disregard the . . Work of God.
v 23 & John 1:29
22 "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?'

John 1:29
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! (NAS)

A.    Religious Works of . . Words. v 22 a
            ". . . "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, . . . "

        1.    He knew the talk, and may have imitated the walk.

        2.    Some times all of us are fooled by one who pretends to be a Christian.

B.    Religious Works of . . Wonders. v 22 b
". . . did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name
        perform many miracles?'

        1.    These people preached, cast out demons, and did miracles. They gave every appearance of
                being saved.

        2.    Some people today seem to chase after miracle workers.

        3.    They would do better to stay home and work for Jesus in their community.

        4.    Look at these statements about John the Baptist.
Matt 11:11
11 "Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen {anyone} greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. (NAS)

John 10:41
41 And many came to Him and were saying, "While John performed no sign, yet everything John said about this man was true." (NAS)

        5.    Do you see John was a great man but did no miracle.

        6.    Don't chase after so called miracle workers, but seek to follow Jesus.

Did a young child ever bring to you something they had made? You look at it and say I wonder what this is, but you asked them to tell you about it. After the describe it you can figure it out.

Suppose you or I come to Jesus and say look at my works. He doesn't need us to describe them he knows they don't amount to salvation. Look at the following verse.

Isa 64:6
6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. (KJV)

C.    Contrast the Works of God. John 1:29
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! (NAS)

        1.    What do those in the Matt. text have that will take away sin?   NOTHING.

We sing this song:
What will wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
What will make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Oh precious is the flow, that makes me white as snow
No other fount I know nothing but the blood of Jesus

An elderly gentleman was out walking with his young grandson. "How far are we from home?" he asked the grandson. The boy answered, "Grandpa, I don't know." The grandfather asked, "Well, where are you?" Again the boy answered, "I don't know." Then the grandfather said good-naturedly, "Sounds to me as if you are lost." The young boy looked up at his grandfather and said, "Nope, I can't be lost. I'm with you." Ultimately, that is the answer to our lostness, too. We can't be lost if He is with us.

Application

Rom 4:7
7 "Blessed are those whose lawless deeds have been forgiven, and whose sins have been covered. (NAS)

3.    Good People can go to Hell because they Disregard the . . Way of God.
v 23 & John 14:6
23 "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.' .

A.    The Way of Man Leads to . . Destruction. v 23

        1.    Proverbs says
Prov 14:12
12 There is a way {which seems} right to a man, but its end is the way of death.    (NAS)

B.    The Way of God Leads to . . Delight. John 14:6
6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me. (NAS)

Early one morning fire broke out in a house on a narrow street. The alarm was sounded by a policeman on duty. Before the fire engines could get to the scene, however, flames were leaping high into the air. Suddenly a young man appeared at an upper window in his pajamas. Firemen quickly placed a ladder against the burning building. But to the consternation of all, he refused to come down, shouting back that he had to get dressed first.

The firemen pleaded, "Come as you are! Come as you are!" but to no avail. The man had waited too long and was buried beneath the ruins.

Application

How much greater tragedy awaits all who refuse to "flee from the wrath to come.". Their delay could cost them their souls.

Conclusion

A twelve-year-old boy became a Christian during a revival. The next week at school his friends questioned him about the experience. "Did you see a vision?" asked one friend. "Did you hear God speak?" asked another. The youngster answered no to all these questions.

"Well, how did you know you were saved?" they asked. The boy searched for an answer and finally he said, "It's like when you catch a fish, you can't see the fish or hear the fish; you just feel him tugging on your line. I just felt God tugging on my heart."
