Some Old Testament Names of God # 3
El-Elyon, and El Roi .
Gen 14:18-23

18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; now he was a priest of God Most High. 19 And he blessed him and said, "Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; 20 And blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand." And he gave him a tenth of all. 21 And the king of Sodom said to Abram, "Give the people to me and take the goods for yourself." 22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom, "I have sworn to the LORD God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth, 23 that I will not take a thread or a sandal thong or anything that is yours, lest you should say, 'I have made Abram rich.' (NAS)

Introduction
A certain little girl, when asked her name, would reply, "I'm Mr. Sugarbrown's daughter." Her mother told her "don't tell people that say" "I'm Jane Sugarbrown."

The pastor spoke to her in Sunday School, and said, "Aren't you Mr. Sugarbrown's daughter?" She replied, "I thought I was, but mother told me not to tell any body."

The little girl needed to learn we can be called by several names.

In our series on the Names of God we are learning more about the different names of God. Today I want to look at two additional titles or names for God. The names are: El-Elyon, and El Roi .

1.    The Name El-Elyon.

Gen 14:18-23 18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; now he was a
priest of God Most High.

A.    What The Name El - Elyon Means Concerning God.

        1.    El - Elyon Means God Is the . . Supreme God. v 18-19
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; now he was a priest of God Most High. 19 And he blessed him and said, "Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth;

The name or title "Elyon" emphasizes God's uniqueness and his supremacy above all others. It reminds us he is the Creator of heaven and earth and the Owner of all. He is not merely mighty, but Almighty.
During the time Abram lived, his father was a worshiper of the moon. He thought the moon was God. These people had all kinds of different gods and so it is significant to come back with this passage of scripture and notice that He said that He is the God Most High. This relates to the Supremacy of God.

Notice again, verse 18 & 19 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; now he was a priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said, "Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth.

The name or title Elyon emphasizes God's uniqueness and his supremacy above all others. It reminds us that He is the Creator of heaven and earth and the Owner of all. He is not merely mighty, but Almighty. That's the emphasis of Elyon. Most High God, Almighty God. Elyon also means Strong God or Strength.

        2.    El - Elyon Means God Is the . . Strong God. v 20
20 And blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand." And he gave him a tenth of all.

Do you catch the strength here? He is a God who is Most High who has delivered him from all of his enemies. When you think about your enemies, if you will remember that your solution is God and that God is the Supreme God; then your enemies come down in their size.

Now it may not be good to say enemies, but any kind of opposition, any kind of difficulty that you or I would be faced with at a particular time is not as big as our God. You see we get our eyes too much on trouble, too much on tribulation and not enough on God.

Elyon is the Strongest. He is the Strongest of the Strong. No other is as great in power and possession. He is the ultimate God, the God of Gods, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords and Abram gave a tenth to him.

This is the first time the tenth is mentioned in the Bible. And this sermon is not about tithing, but you really wouldn't expect a Baptist preacher to see that and not say something about it, would you? Well, the tenth is given by Abram to the Priest of God.

A pastor preached on the ownership of God and the trusteeship of man. A wealthy landowner invited him home for lunch. The man took him to an area where he could see out to the land and all that he owned. And he said preacher, do you mean to tell me that all of this is not mine? And the preacher said, sir, ask me in a hundred years.

That puts it all in perspective, doesn't it? You know that the older you get and look back on how many times have possessions or things seems so very important and yet the older you get the less importance they have. They kind of wane in their importance and family and friendship become more meaningful. Those are the things that are the most important. El-Elyon is God not only Supreme but God who is the Strongest.

        3.    El - Elyon Means God Is the. . Sovereign God. v 21-23

If we boil all of that down; Abram was saying God is the Sovereign God. If I am made rich, it is going to be to the Glory of God. If I am made poor, it can still be to the Glory of God. Whatever happens, it is going to be the Sovereignty of God.

Now sometimes when people here you talking about sovereignty, they want to put you in the camp with the Calvinists and, you know, I'm not in the camp with the Calvinists but I believe in the Sovereignty of God. To me The Sovereignty of God simply means that God is Boss, He is Lord. He doesn't have to ask you or I or anybody else He has everything. He is sufficient within Himself to do everything that He wants to do. My God is so Sovereign He can give me a choice and still know what I'm going to do.

You see, it's the Sovereignty of God. He's a God that is over all and He is the Boss. He is the one who is to be held highest and in the most esteem. Here we find Abram saying, "I will not take a thread or a sandal thong" because I don't want you to come back and say, 'well, I made Abram rich.' Abram knew the Sovereign God made him what he was.

This is an interesting story about Billy Graham. When he was kind of a young, 50 years ago he was like any other traveling young evangelist. But he came into Los Angels and the crusade began to develop and expand as the hand of God was obviously on him. Mr. Hearst went and heard him. And he came back and told his newspaper promote Billy Graham. Give him the utmost of coverage and the news media sent it all over the United States and it did help Billy Graham.

Someone years later some one said, well, the newspapers made Billy Graham. You know what some wise and really intelligent person said? He said, "Let's see you make another one. Let's see you make another one." You see the Sovereignty of God. How come Hearst happened to be there? How come Hearst said blow up Billy Graham, give him ultimate coverage? God wanted it done and got it accomplished. He is the Sovereign God.

Application

EL-ELYON, the MOST HIGH GOD, who is the first cause of everything. The POSSESSOR of both the heavens and the earth.

I worship and adore You,   You are the EVERLASTING GOD, the LIVING-GOD, the MERCIFUL GOD, the FAITHFUL GOD, the MIGHTY GOD. You are TRUTH, JUSTICE, RIGHTEOUSNESS, and PERFECTION. You are EL-ELYON, the HIGHEST SOVEREIGN, of the heavens and the earth. HALLOWED BE THY NAME!

That's what it means related to God but what does it mean related to mankind. As we look and we say, this is what El-Elyon has to do in relationship to God. But translated into my life what does that mean?

B.    What The Name El - Elyon Means for Mankind.

        1.    El-Elyoni Means Man . . Can Praise His Strength.
Ps 57:1-2 1 Be gracious to me, O God, be gracious to me, for my soul takes refuge in Thee; and in the shadow of Thy wings I will take refuge, until destruction passes by. 2 I will cry to God Most High, to God who accomplishes {all things} for me. (NAS)

Yes it means that El-Elyon can be Praised for His Strength. And I need to praise Him over and over again for His strength and if I am busy praising Him for Him being El-Elyon the Strong God, my enemies, my difficulties, my trials and tribulations, my troubles of any kind will not seem so great.

        1.    Elyon Means Man . . Can Praise His Supremacy.

Ps 138:2
2 I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name. (KJV)

I'll remind you of a story about me and Janice Meier, let's just say she's our resident Hebrew scholar, our on call Hebrew scholar. She is with the Sunday School Board helping write and edit

Sunday School literature. Some of your ladies have the Woman's Study Bible. It is an excellent study Bible and she is one of the editors of that Bible. But as she was here on Sunday morning I said "Janice are you going to be here for awhile" and she said "yes." I said "come by to my office would you and let me talk about some things in Hebrew."

She came in I said, "okay, here's what I want you to study with me." And I pulled up on my computer the Hebrew Bible. She said, "don't you have a Bible?" I said well, "right there it is."

You know, she didn't want to use that new-fangled stuff on the computer. She said, "don't you have a Hebrew Bible." Well, I got it out and dusted it off, and gave it to her. Well, then we studied this verse. This Psalm 138:2 and I quoted the King James. The last phrase of the King James is "for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name."

I wanted some additional help on this. I said, "what is that saying?" Tell me more in the Hebrew what that is saying. I studied a little bit but I'll yield to you that you are superior in Hebrew scholarship. And we began studying and began looking at some of the other translations and she said, "Well, the evidence is such that there is as much evidence or more for the King James translation in that phrase as there is in any others. So you're well on good grounds to be able to say to magnify thy word above all thy name. Can you think about that for a moment. That your word is magnified above your name. When you really think about that if your word isn't any good, then your name isn't either.

I discussed the idea of the inerrancy of scripture with someone the other day. They said well, it's so simple to me. If we have an inerrant God then why can't we have an inerrant scripture? And it just does really follow, it's just that simple. If you have a problem with the Word of God, it is because there is some kind of problem with God. And here it says He magnifies His word above His name. And so the Supremacy of God, I can praise Him in that manner and I can say like this someone said, Father, You magnified Your Word, above all of YOUR NAME!

The WORD was made flesh and dwelt among us, and HIS Name is JESUS! HALLOWED BE THY NAME! The Lion and the Lamb, Jesus.

        2.    El - Elyon Means Man . . Can Praise His Sovereignty.

El-Elyon can mean to man that we can praise His Sovereignty. Elyon sovereignty delivers his children and sovereignty accomplishes his purpose even in their suffering, which itself is temporary and will be followed by the eternal refreshment he promises to bestow on them. He is sovereign. You look further in the Old Testament for this phrase Most High God. It is interesting to note, and if you do not have your note sheet, turn to

Isaiah 14:13-14 this passage of scripture, if you do much reading about it or studying about it, it is thought to be the words of Satan. It is given in a context of a king of Persia but many will say, and I agree, that it is actually the words of Satan. And it says in the 13th verse, "But you said in your heart, 'I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, and I will sit on the mount of assembly in the recesses of the north. Look at verse 14, "I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High."

Satan desires to exalt himself and say I'm going to be like the Most High. Well, he never did accomplish that. Interestingly, if you're going to the New Testament and you look up this phrase Most High God, it is used 4 times. Three times, it is used by demons Jesus is about to cast out.

Let me read to you from Luke 8:28
And seeing Jesus, he cried out and fell before Him, and said in a loud voice, "What do I have to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me." So here you have Satan wanting to exalt himself like unto and be the Most High God. But on this earth when Jesus comes those who are obviously demon possessed as Jesus prepares to cast out that demon, the demon says, O thou Son of the Most High God.

Hell recognizes Jesus and hell recognizes that El-Elyon is the Most High God. So interesting in the New Testament times, the scribes and the Pharisees deep and skilled in the Word in the Old Testament they didn't recognize Jesus as the Most High, but demons did.

In our discussions in Hungry Men and some other places, recently this came out, some one said that maybe we are too judgmental here. Maybe Christians shouldn't be judging other Christians in that way and some one said, well, lost people judge them. And you know what, a lost person does know how a Christian ought to live and many times they will tell us how we ought to live. Satan knew that this was the Son of God Most High.

You may ask "how can God be Sovereign and there be choices for man."

J. I. Packer uses the following illustration of the antinomy of divine sovereignty and human responsibility: "Modern physics faces an antinomy, in this sense, in its study of light. There is cogent evidence to show that light consists of waves, and equally cogent evidence to show that it consists of particles. It is not apparent how light can be both waves and particles, but the evidence is there, and so neither view can be ruled out in favor of the other. Neither, however, can be reduced to the other or explained in terms of the other; the two seemingly incompatible positions must be held together, and both must be treated as true. Such a necessity scandalizes our tidy minds, no doubt, but there is no help for it if we are to be loyal to the facts" (J. I. Packer, Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God [Downers Grove, Ill.: Inter-Varsity, 1961] p. 19). 24.

Application

El Elyon is: God Almighty, Strong, Supreme, and Sovereign.

2.    The Name El-Roi.   Gen 16:8-12

8 And he said, "Hagar, Sarai's maid, where have you come from and where are you going?" And she said, "I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai." 9 Then the angel of the LORD said to her, "Return to your mistress, and submit yourself to her authority." 10 Moreover, the angel of the LORD said to her, "I will greatly multiply your descendants so that they shall be too many to count." 11 The angel of the LORD said to her further, "Behold, you are with child, and you shall bear a son; and you shall call his name Ishmael, because the LORD has given heed to your affliction. 12 "And he will be a wild donkey of a man, His hand {will be} against everyone, and everyone's hand {will be} against him; and he will live to the east of all his brothers." 13 Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, "Thou art a God who sees"; for she said, "Have I even remained alive here after seeing Him?" (NAS)

Introduction
The newer translations of scripture like the New American will capitalize the name Lord in the phrase "The angel of the LORD". When you see that in the newer translations, It is calling attention to what is called a "theopaney." What is a theopaney you ask? It is an appearance of God in the Old Testament. .

Elsewhere the scripture say that no man can see God and live. So how can God make an appearance in the Old Testament? Glad you asked. That is the appearance of Jesus Christ in the Old Testament. You going to find some discussion about that, somebody may be saying that is the first time I ever heard that. Okay, you just study it out and learn about that. When you come to the New Testament, you never find the angel of the LORD in capital letters. Why so, because it's Jesus and Jesus came in human form in the New Testament. I urge you to give credence to that thought.

A.    What The Name El-Roi Means Concerning God. Gen 16:13

        1.    El - Roi Means God Is the . . All Seeing God.. Gen 16:13

This is the story of Abram and Sarah's handmaiden. You recall the story, Sarah did not have children and she said to her husband, Abram, you take my handmaid and you have a child with her. When the child was born, Sarah got angry and wanted the woman cast out. And so she was cast out.

Now in this verse of scripture we find her basically in isolation. Is God in favor of what Sarah and Abram did? I don't think so. I would not vote yes on that. Is God, nevertheless going to take care of the handmaid, yes He is. And the first time in scripture that El-Roi is mentioned, it is mentioned by this handmaid and she is saying, Thou art a God who sees and sees me in the midst of my trouble. In the midst of my difficulties.

The idea of the omnipresence of our God meaning He is always present is in this word. He always sees, He always knows. Have you ever been in a place where man might say it's a Godforsaken place, and yet you recognize that God was there?

Illustration
As a young lad, I went out with some boys who grew up in the country and they were going to take me out hunting. We went out the night before and sleep out in the woods. Well, you know for a city boy I was out there in the middle of the woods and this guy said, I'm going to go back to the car for a moment. He said "you stay here" and he gave me a pistol and said "if any mountain lions comes up you shoot them. I think he was teasing me but he gave me the gun.   Well, he was lucky he didn't get shot coming back.

But you know something else, that was probably the most wide open place that I had ever been in and I sensed the presence of God. It was obvious that God was there. Do you have a similar experience? El-Roi means that He sees us in a time of trouble, He sees us in a time of righteousness.

        2.    El - Roi Means God Is the . . Proper Seeing God.. 1 Sam 16:7, and others

But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God } sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." (NAS)

In Psalm 34:15 The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous, and His ears are open to their cry.

In 2 Chr. 16:9 for the eyes of the LORD move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His. He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His.

In 1 Peter 3:12 in the later part of verse 12 it says "For the face of the Lord is against those who do evil. And so I can recognize this about God, He's going to see me in times of trouble, He's going to see me in times of righteousness, He's going to see me in times of sin, in times of evil. How do I interpret that to mean, that God is always present.

Psalm 139:7-12 Where can I go from Thy Spirit? Or where can I flee from Thy presence? If I ascend to heaven, Thou art there; if I make my bed in Sheol, behold, Thou art there. If I take the wings of the dawn, if I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, Even there Thy hand will lead me, and Thy right hand will lay hold of me. If I say, :"Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, and the light around me will be night." Even the darkness is not dark to Thee and the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to Thee.

It is a reassuring aspect of God that He is there. That He is a God of Presence, that He is a God that you can know Him and know His presence.

Illustration
Did you ever have any time when you were bored? R C Sprool makes the observation "You were not thinking about God! It's impossible to be in the presence of God and be bored."

        3.    El - Roi Means God Is . . Just. 1 Sam 16:7

But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God } sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." (NAS)

El-Roi also means to man that God is Always Just. How do we notice people? We notice their physical appearance, don't we? God doesn't look that way. God knows about our physical appearance but He looks far beyond and sees our heart. Man looks on the outward and God looks on the heart. His presence is always there. What it means to me is that I don't need to be as much concerned about outward appearances but I need to be concerned about my heart. I need to be concerned about coming into the Presence.

Have you ever had this thought come to you? It's come to me more in the last couple of weeks. This thought, why do we think that just like that I can bow my head and I can be in the Presence of God. That I can pray to Him. Did you ever think about that? He has got all of these names for Him. He is the Supreme God, and Jim McCullen tells God, I want to talk to Him, just like that. That is the human prospective.

When I get a scriptural prospective I can see how He allows access through Jesus Christ. The Bible says, come boldly to the throne. I don't think I come boldly to the throne very often. In more recent days, I've been trying to even add a dimension of humility as I come to Him. You know, trying to do that. I've been singing before my first prayer in the morning. I just sing to myself. Father, I adore You. I lay my life before you. You know that puts me more in a mood where I'm really focusing on Him and reflecting on Him. He is a God of Presence. It does not make any difference where you go, what you do, where you have been or are going to be. God is there.

I've read this story several times, and I've copied it off and I said to myself someday I'm going to be able to use that story. There will be a good place to use it and this appears to be the time.

There is a rather prominent minister up in the Northwest area of the United States he has a television ministry in that area. He was on vacation and was on Interstate 70 near Dayton, Ohio.

He relates, "at the time I was driving on 1-75 near Dayton, Ohio, with my wife and children. We turned off the highway for a rest and refreshment stop."

My wife Barbara and children went into the restaurant. I suddenly felt the need to stretch my legs, so waved them on ahead saying I'd join them later. I bought a soft drink, and as I walked toward a dairy Queen, feelings of self pity enshrouded my mind. I loved the Lord and my ministry, but I felt drained, burdened. My cup was empty. Suddenly the impatient ringing of a telephone nearby jarred me out of my doldrums. It was coming from a phone booth at a service station on the corner.

Wasn't anyone going to answer the phone? Noise from the traffic flowing through the busy intersection must have drowned out the sound because the service station attendant continued looking after his customers, oblivious to the incessant ringing.

"Why doesn't somebody answer that phone?" I muttered. I began reasoning. "It may be important. What if it's an emergency?" Curiosity overcame my indifference. I stepped inside the booth and picked up the phone. "Hello," I said casually and took a big sip of my drink. The operator said:" Long distance call for Ken Gaub." My eyes widened, and I almost choked on a chunk of ice. Swallowing hard, I said, "You're crazy!" Then realizing I shouldn't speak to an operator like that, I added, "This can't be! I was walking down the road, not bothering anyone, and the phone was ringing..."

"Is Ken Gaub there?" the operator interrupted, "I have a long distance call for him." It took a moment to gain control of my babbling, but I finally replied, "Yes, he is here." Searching for a possible explanation, I wondered if I could possibly be on Candid Camera! Still shaken,    perplexed, I asked, "How in the world did you reach me here? I was walking down the road, the pay phone started ringing, and I just answered it on a chance. You can't mean me." "Well," the operator asked, "is Mr. Gaub there or isn't he?"

"Yes, I am Ken Gaub," I said, finally convinced by the tone of her voice that the call was real.    Then I heard another voice say, "Yes, that's him, operator. That's Ken Gaub." I listened dumbfounded to a strange voice identify herself. "I'm Millie from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. You don't know me, Mr. Gaub, but I'm desperate. Please help me." "What can I do for you?"

She began weeping. Finally she regained control and continued. "I was about to commit suicide, had just finished writing a note, when I began to pray and tell God I really didn't want to do this. Then I suddenly remembered seeing you on television and thought if I could just talk to you, you could help me. I knew that was impossible because I didn't know how to reach you, I didn't know anyone who could help me find you. Then some numbers came to my mind, and I scribbled them down."

At this point she began weeping again, and I prayed silently for wisdom to help her. She continued, "I looked at the numbers and thought, Wouldn't it be wonderful if I had a miracle from God, and He has given me Ken's phone number? I decided to try calling it. I can't believe I'm talking to you. Are you in your office in California?" I replied, "Lady, I don't have an office in California. My office is in Yakima, Washington." A little surprised, she asked, "Oh really, then where are you?"

"Don't you know?" I responded. "You made the call." She explained, "But I don't even know what area I'm calling. I just dialed the number that I had on this paper." "Ma'am, you won't believe this, but I'm in a phone booth in Dayton, Ohio!" "Really?" she exclaimed. "Well, what are you doing there?" I kidded her gently, "Well, I'm answering the phone. It was ringing as I walked by, so I answered it." Knowing this encounter could only have been arranged by God, I began to counsel the woman. As she told me of her despair and frustration, the presence of the Holy Spirit flooded the phone booth giving me words of wisdom beyond my ability. In a matter of moments, she prayed the sinner's prayer and met the One who would lead her out of her situation into a new life.

I walked away from that telephone booth with an electrifying sense of our heavenly Father's concern for each of His children. What were the astronomical odds of this happening. With all the millions of phones and innumerable combinations of numbers, only an all-knowing God could have caused that woman to call that number in that phone booth at that moment in time.

Forgetting my drink and nearly bursting with exhilaration, I headed back to my family, wondering if they would believe my story. Maybe I better not tell this I thought, but I couldn't contain it. "Barb, you won't believe this! God knows where I am!"

God also knows where you are. Place yourself in His hands, concentrate on knowing His will for your life, and He will never forsake or forget you. By Ken Gaub

Application

Was God surprised that Ken Gaub happened to be right near that telephone? I don't think so. He is El-Elyon and El-Roi a Sovereign God of Presence. He is the God who sees.
