Much of this sermon came from a taped sermon by  one of my favorite Preachers Ronnie Dunn.   He has a ministry called Life Styles Ministries.
Prayer:  The Christians Greatest Need
Rom 8:26-29
26 And in the Same Way the Spirit Also Helps Our Weakness; for We Do Not Know How to Pray as We Should, but the Spirit Himself Intercedes for {Us} with Groanings Too Deep for Words;   27 and He Who Searches the Hearts Knows What the Mind of the Spirit Is, Because He Intercedes for the Saints According to {The Will Of} God.   28 And We Know That God Causes All Things to Work Together for Good to Those Who Love God, to Those Who Are Called According to {His} Purpose.  29 For Whom He Foreknew, He Also Predestined {To Become} Conformed to the Image of His Son, That He Might Be the First-born among Many Brethren;

Introduction:
In One of My Doctoral Seminars a Fellow Student Did a Research Paper. In His Report He Said "We All Know the Telephone Company Is in the Communications Business". He Further Reported They Found There Biggest Employee and Employer Problem Was a Communication problem.

Christians Have Many Needs I Believe the Greatest Need of the Christian Is Communication with God. Please Listen Carefully as I Share from this Text Three Facits of this Great Need.

Our Greatest Need to Recognize that . . Prayer Is a Gift to The Saved.

Our Greatest Need to Recognize that . . Prayer Is a Ministry to the Saved.

1. Our Greatest Need to Recognize
Prayer Is a Gift to The Saved. Rom 8:26-29

26 And in the Same Way the Spirit Also Helps Our Weakness; for We Do Not Know How to Pray as We Should, but the Spirit Himself Intercedes for {Us} with Groanings Too Deep for Words;
27 and He Who Searches the Hearts Knows What the Mind of the Spirit Is, Because He Intercedes for the Saints According to {The Will Of} God.
28 And We Know That God Causes All Things to Work Together for Good to Those Who Love God, to Those Who Are Called According to {His} Purpose.
29 For Whom He Foreknew, He Also Predestined {To Become} Conformed to the Image of His Son, That He Might Be the First-born among Many Brethren;

A. We Are Given a Father . . To Pray To. v 27 c-28

B. We Are Given a Saviour . . To Pray Through. v 29

C. We Are Given a Spirit . . To Pray in . v 26-27

1. Encouragement to Pray in the Spirit.

a. For all the Saints.

Eph 6:18 with All Prayer and Petition Pray at All Times in the Spirit, and with this in View, Be on the Alert with All Perseverance and Petition for All the Saints,

b. For our own Faith.

Jude 1:20 but You, Beloved, Building Yourselves up on Your Most Holy Faith; Praying in the Holy Spirit;

2. Evidence of Praying in The Spirit.

Evidence that . . Praying in The Spirit Is Easier. Rom 8:6-9

6 For the Mind Set on the Flesh Is Death, but the Mind Set on the Spirit Is Life and Peace,

7 Because the Mind Set on the Flesh Is Hostile Toward God; for it Does Not Subject Itself to the Law of God, for It Is Not Even Able { to Do So}; 8 and Those Who Are in the Flesh Cannot Please God. 9 However, You Are Not in the Flesh but in the Spirit, If Indeed the Spirit of God Dwells in You. But If Anyone Does Not Have the Spirit of Christ, He Does Not Belong to Him.

b Evidence that . . Praying in The Flesh Is Hard. Rom 8:26

26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Application

We need to realize what a great gift we have in the gift of prayer.

2.    Our Greatest Need to Recognize
 Prayer Is a Ministry to Us. v 26-27

26 And in the Same Way the Spirit Also Helps Our Weakness; for We Do Not Know How to Pray as We Should, but the Spirit Himself Intercedes for {Us} with Groanings Too Deep for Words;
27 and He Who Searches the Hearts Knows What the Mind of the Spirit Is, Because He Intercedes for the Saints According to {The Will Of} God.

A. Because We Are Weak. "affirmities or weaknesses"

1. Mind Wanders

2. Mind Causes Doubts

3. Mind Went Blank

a. Weakness Toward Prayer.

B. We Must Admit We Are Weak in Prayer.

1. Because We Are Weak. "Our Weakness" Paul Said it

Not a Complex We Are Weak

We Do Not Know How to Pray. V26

v 26 "Helps" Spirit Helps Our Weakness ("Instead Of; Along With")

The Holy Spirit Prays Along With Us -- Not Without Us

Rejoice in Your Weakness. 2 Co 12:9 And He Has Said to Me, "My Grace Is Sufficient for You, for Power Is Perfected in Weakness." Most Gladly, Therefore, I Will Rather Boast about My Weaknesses, That the Power of Christ May Dwell in Me.

1. We Have The Weakness of Indifference - - Lethargy Apathy

We Do Not Want Too-- The Flesh

Rom 8:7 Because the Mind Set on the Flesh Is Hostile Toward God; for it Does Not Subject Itself to the Law of God, for it Is Not Even Able { to Do So};

2. Weakness of Inaccessibility - - Sin Separates.

The blood Opens The Door -- Spirit Ushers Us In..

Eph 2:18 for Through Him We Both Have Our Access in One Spirit to the Father.

Eph 3:12 in Whom We Have Boldness and Confident Access Through Faith in Him.

3. Weakness of Ignorance. "We Do Not Know". v 26 -27

We Do Not Know What to Pray For.

We Do Not Know How to Pray For.

Illustration:
Our Reception to Pray Can Be Contrasted to an Audiance with the President of the United States. Suppose the President Invited You to Come And Talk with Him. Suppose He Sent an Ambassador to Encourage You to Come and Talk. Would You Do It.

The Holy Spirit Invites Us to the Throne Room to Talk with God. Let's Take Every Advantage of the Invitation.

5 . Weakness of Inability.

The Holy Spirit Gives Ability. Rom 8:11

But If the Spirit of Him Who Raised Jesus from the Dead Dwells In You, He Who Raised Christ Jesus from the Dead Will Also Give Life to Your Mortal Bodies Through His Spirit Who Indwells You.

6. Weakness of Interference. Eph 6:12 & 18

For Our Struggle Is Not Against Flesh and Blood, but Against the Rulers, Against the Powers, Against the World Forces of this Darkness, Against the Spiritual {Forces} of Wickedness in the Heavenly {Places.}

18 With All Prayer and Petition Pray at All Times in the Spirit, And with this in View, Be on the Alert with All Perseverance and Petition For All the Saints,

Illustration:
Throwing Snowballs at the Rock of Gilbralter Will Have as Much Effect as Prayer in Flesh.

7. Weakness of Expression. v 26 :cannot be uttered:

Illustration
An Indian was sending smoke signials and in ther distance saw an atomic boom explosion. He said I Wish I Could Have Said That.

v 22 Creation Groans

Rom 8:22 For We Know That the Whole Creation Groans and Suffers the Pains Of Childbirth Together until Now.

v 23 Christians Groan

Rom 8:23 And Not Only This, but Also We Ourselves, Having the First Fruits of the Spirit, Even We Ourselves Groan Within Ourselves, Waiting Eagerly for {Our} Adoption as Sons, the Redemption of Our Body.

v 26 The Spirit Groans

Rom 8:26 And in the Same Way the Spirit Also Helps Our Weakness; for We Do Not Know How to Pray as We Should, but the Spirit Himself Intercedes For {Us} with Groanings Too Deep for Words;

Gal 4:6 And Because You Are Sons, God Has Sent Forth the Spirit of His Son into Our Hearts, Crying, "Abba! Father!"
