30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. NIV  30 When Jesus had tasted it, he said, "It is finished," and bowed his head and dismissed his spirit. TLB

Introduction:
Leonard Ravenhill said about the words "It Is Finished" I don't believe that ever in history,
anywhere, at any time, by anybody, were three words more pregnant with meaning than these three words given by one Man at the end of His life - It is finished.

These three English words are actually one Greek Word - TETELESTAI - - - IT IS FINISHED - IT IS ACCOMPLISHED - IT IS COMPLETED - THE WORK IS DONE ! - - - IT WAS NOT A CRY OF DEFEAT IT WAS A SHOUT OF VICTORY !

It was the GREEK Word TETELESTAI -

IT WAS FINISHED -

        IT STANDS FINISHED -

            IT WILL ALWAYS BE FINISHED.

1.    The Theology of Completion; Speaks to False Theology.

A.    False Theology Says . . Jesus Is Not the Uniquely Divine Son of God
        1. He Finishes The Plan Of Salvation and says IT IS FINISHED not I am finished.

B.    False Theology Says . . We must Add to the Work of the Cross.
        1. What Can We Add When Jesus Said It Is Finished?

C.    False Theology Says . . Death is Final.
        1.    Jesus said "It Is finished" Not He was Finished.

D.    False Theology Says . . Death is Defeat.
        1.    This Is A Cry of Victory. GREEK word - Tetelestai It means paid in full.

1. TO THE SERVANT - When the job was completed, the Servant would say to the master - TETELESTAI - meaning I have completed the job you gave me to do. I did it - I won - I overcame And the Master will say to the servant - "Well Done.

TO THE PRIEST - The Jewish people would bring their sacrifice to be offered - after the high priest examined and excepted it - He would say - TETELESTAI - meaning It is perfect, It is excepted!

TO THE MERCHANT - The debt had been fully paid - When you purchased something, the merchant would take your money and hand you a receipt - TETELESTAI - Pd. In full.

TO THE ARTIST - When an Artist would complete his work, he would step back and say TETELESTAI - It is finished. The picture is completed and excellent work. When Jesus came, He completed the Old Testament Picture of the Christ to come - He completed the picture and turned the light on it. Song of Solomon 5:16 - He is altogether lovely.. (1)

Illustration
When our first baby was born I was in the room when the doctor came in to see Christa and he said "you have a perfect baby 5 finger and 5 toes every thing is in the right place. I thought he could have said "TETELESTAI ".

Application

What death did to Jesus is nothing compared to what Jesus did to death. --James S. Hewett, Illustrations Unlimited (Wheaton: Tyndale House Publishers, Inc, 1988) pp. 142-143.

2. The Theology of Completion; Speaks to Obedience in "What" Is Finished.

A.    The . . Consummation of the Plan. "It Is Finished".
        1.    As stated In John 3:16 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only
                begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

        2.    As reported "A Lamb Slain" from the foundation.

        3.    A way to make us righteous. 2 Cor. 5 21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be
                sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. NKJV

B. The . . Conditions of the Plan "Whosoever".

        1. Anyone can come.
        2.    Anytime they can come.
        3.    Anywhere they can come.

ILLUSTRATION:
I understand Michael Angelo sculptured his work called DAVID from a piece of marble discarded discarded by other artist. In Jesus we have the perfect work of the redeemers art.

APPLICATION:

Jesus was obedient unto death EVEN the death of the Cross. Man's Plans Are Unfinished.

God Is Finished In Jesus.

3.    The Theology of Completion; Speaks to Obedience in "Who" Finished It.

A.    Jesus was to finish It & He did.
        1. Who Jesus is NOT.
            a.    NOT Just a good teacher
            b.    NOT one of many good Prophets.

        2.    Who Jesus Is.
            a.    John 1:1    In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and
                                    the Word was God. NKJV

            b.    John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld
                                His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of
                                grace and truth. NKJV

            c.    John 20:28     And Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!"

            d.    1 Cor 15:45 And so it is written, "The first man Adam became a living being." The last
                                    Adam became a life-giving spirit. NKJV

                    1)    First Adam: Fruit of the Tree = Sin
                    2)    Second Adam Fruit of the Tree = Salvation

THE CROSS WAS HIS OWN

They borrowed a bed to lay His head
When Christ the Lord came down;
They borrowed the ass in the mountain pass
For Him to ride to town;
But the crown that He wore and the cross that He bore
were His own-- The cross was His own.

He borrowed the bread when the crowd He fed
On the grassy mountainside;
He borrowed the dish of broken fish
With which He satisfied;
But the crown that He wore and the cross that He bore
were His own-- The cross was His own.

He borrowed the ship in which to sit
To teach the multitude;
He borrowed a nest in which to rest;
He had never a home so rude;
But the crown that He wore and the cross that He bore
were His own-- The cross was His own.

He borrowed a room on His was to the tomb,
The Passover lamb to eat;
They borrowed a cave for Him a grave,
They borrowed a winding sheet;
But the crown that He wore and the cross that He bore
Were His own-- The cross was His own.

HE FINISHED THE WORK OF SACRIFICE ON THE CROSS

HE FINISHED IT!    TETELESTAI !!!!!

ILLUSTRATION:
A little boy gave his blood so his sister could live. After giving his blood he ask when am I going to die? The little fellow was willing to give his blood even though he thought he would die.

Jesus finished God's plan for giving us forgiveness, and life. It did cost Him His life. He gave us an example to build a theology of obedience.

APPLICATION:

This little boy didn't understand but was willing to give his life. Jesus did understand and was
willing to give His life so you and I could be forgiven

4.    The Theology of Completion; Speaks to "How" it Was Finished.

A.    HOW IT . . WAS NOT Finished.
        1.    By suggesting a lifestyle.
        2.    Be giving authority to a Church.
        3.    By ordering baptism.
        4.    By prescribing a list of Good Works.

B.    HOW IT . . WAS Finished.
        1.    Through the sinless Christ dying on the cross for our salvation.
            a.    He pays the price.
            b.    He alone made the sacrifice.

ILLUSTRATION:
Suppose I give the church a check for an amount that will pay off building debt. Would you be excited to get it? Most of you would not because you know I don't have that kind of money.

What about a known billionaire giving us a check for that kind of money. All of us would be excited. We know the check has proper backing. It is finished was pronounced by JESUS.

ILLUSTRATION:
A Little Old Lady, came to the insurance office , and said I can't pay this Insurance policy any more, my husband died 5 years ago, and I just don't have the money to keep up the payments.

She didn't understand the need to pay was over, and the policy was all paid up because her husband died.

APPLICATION:

Some people are like that lady they think they have to keep trying to pay for their salvation But friend you don't have to pay it , it has been paid In full by Jesus.

YES, IT IS FINISHED MEANS.

The Servant had finished His work,

The Perfect Sacrifice had been offered, Sins debt had been paid in full,

The Picture had been completed.

JESUS HAS FINISHED WHAT HE CAME TO EARTH TO DO -
SATAN HAD BEEN DEFEATED ! (2)

CONCLUSION:

Jesus paid it all,
all to Him I owe
sin had left a crimson stain
He washed it white as snow.
